Dear Rob/Editor,

I am married and not yet divorced from my Thai wife, can I possibly invite a friend to come to Belgium, without my wife's permission! My wife and I have been living at different addresses for 9 months.

Regards,

Arthur

Dear Arthur,
If a Thai person wants to come along as a friend for a short visit - of a maximum of 90 days - to Belgium, this is normally possible. The Thai person could come as a tourist completely independently (with his own financial means and accommodation in a hotel, for example). But that person could of course also come along as your guest, with accommodation provided and/or a financial guarantee. Guarantee is done with the form “appendix 3bis”. You can simply fill it in, your wife does not have to sign for it.
For more information about the visa procedure, see the (downloadable PDF) dossier here on Thailandblog in the menu on the left.
At the moment, due to the Covid measures, certain restrictions are in place. Non-essential travel by Thai citizens (who have no family or residence in Belgium) is currently not possible. Keep an eye on the website of the embassy or government to find out when a Thai can visit friends or tourists again.
