Schengen visa question: Can my Thai partner fly to the USA?

Dear editors,

My Thai partner has been in the Netherlands for 3 months with a 5-year visa/IND residence permit. In May of this year, her daughter who lives in the USA will get married. My partner has a valid Thai passport and also a still valid visa for the USA.

Can she buy a return plane ticket for the USA in the Netherlands? Or do special rules apply?

She would like to experience her daughter's wedding.

Kind advice.

Regards,

Hansest

Dear Hansest

Someone who is in possession of a valid Dutch residence permit can easily travel through, in and out of Europe with the combination of the Thai passport plus the residence permit. So she does come in and out of the Netherlands, no special rules apply. From a Dutch point of view, she can easily buy a return ticket to America.

Of course I don't know the American rules, but I assume that a valid American visa plus any requirements that come with that visa (being able to show at the border with America that you meet all requirements such as sufficient money, no nefarious plans, etc.) will get you there just come in. Check to be sure on the American embassy or immigration website about there are special rules, but I can't really imagine that. So you can just buy a ticket.

With a valid passport (note: most countries require 3 or 6 months validity upon entry or departure from their country) plus residence pass plus valid visa, you should be able to enter all countries and then simply travel back to the Netherlands.

Regards,

Rob

Did that for my wife from Laos a few years ago.
Then had to go to Amsterdam. Please note: you can only make an appointment digitally and it can be quite late.

Hans' partner already has a valid USA visa so why would they apply for a second one?

That's right, apply for a visa at the US consulate in Amsterdam. You must make an appointment. Check in advance which documents you need to submit.
I went through the same procedure with my partner 5-6 years ago. Bit cumbersome but not really a problem. We then had 6 excellent weeks in the US.
    Success with it.

      Dear Paulg and Andre,
In my question I write that my Thai partner still has a valid visa for the USA.
So she does not have to go to the US Embassy.
      Regards, Hansest
