The Legal Aid Board has decided to no longer grant legal aid for objections and appeals relating to short-stay visas.

Until now, a foreign national who was denied a short-stay visa could hire a lawyer and would then have to pay around 150 euros. This expired on April 1, 2018. An objection procedure with the help of a lawyer against a rejected visa will now also turn out to be a lot more expensive.

The argument of the Board is “that the costs are not in reasonable proportion to the importance of the case. It concerns an (intangible) interest that is directly related to the use of free time or a personal interest that is socially insufficiently important to justify the costs of a lawyer.”
