We would like to know if there are also people who make a border run from Surat Thani to Butterworth (Malaysia)? And if so, what is your experience with it? Is it possible to get there by train? And what are the costs for a visa for Malaysia?

As a Dutch citizen, you do not need a visa for Malaysia.
The Thai train runs as far as I know to the border (pedang basar).
Then by Malaysian train to Butterworth.
Years ago the Thai train ran as far as Butterworth.
There was also a Malaysian train from Hay Yai

You don't have to go to Butterworth at all.
Cross the border at Sadao. Cross the piece of no man's land (approximately 600 meters).
Cross the border in Malaysia, and you can immediately leave Malaise on the other side. Walk through No man's land again, possibly Tax-free shopping. Thailand back in, and you're done. Avoid Friday afternoon until evening, and avoid Sunday afternoon until evening. And also other days off. Then the rows are gigantic.

If you really want to take that train-bus is also possible: to Haad Yai. Train times are geared to overnight departures from BKK, so most at the end of the night and very often hours late.
