Questioner: Barry
I have 2 questions regarding a Dutch passport and visa extension. My NL passport is valid until June 4, 2024. I have to make my annual extension visa O before October 20. Can I do that with my old passport or do I have to apply for a new passport now?
And how long does it take from application to receiving an invitation to go to the embassy in Bkk?
Please see the appreciated response to my questions

- – If you apply for an annual extension with your old passport before October 20, that “annual” extension will only run until June 4, in other words until the end of the validity period of your passport. You will then lose the rest of that annual extension. Before June 4, after the data from your old passport has been transferred to the new one, you will have to apply for a new annual extension. Your annual extension will then run from June 4 in the future.
– If you immediately apply for your annual extension with a new passport, you must first have the data from your old passport transferred to your new passport. But if you then apply for an annual extension, it will simply be with your new passport and will run from October 20 as before and you will of course then receive a full year.
Up to you to decide what you prefer.

I guess it depends on when you can make an appointment.
Then I read that it takes 4 weeks to deliver your passport, if everything is in order.

As a Belgian, I will continue with what is stated here on the link of your embassy, but your fellow countrymen who have already had to deal with this will probably be able to tell you more about it.
Maybe this is also something for you if you had to live nearby.

New Dutch passport applied for at the embassy on August 16, 2023.
After paying an extra €10 for priority, the passport was ready for collection on August 21 (in five days).
Without priority it would take 6-8 weeks, the embassy said on August 16.
It's strange that with some extra money you can suddenly finish everything in 5 days instead of 6-8 weeks.
That's not strange at all. In Belgium this is called an urgent procedure.
Has been introduced for people who have to leave suddenly and unexpectedly (e.g. in work situations) and do not yet have an International passport.
Can also be used by careless people who have forgotten that their passport expires. In Belgium, this procedure costs significantly more than 10 euros.
Isn't it normal that you have to pay a little more to skip the line (if you apply for a new passport at the Belgian embassy in BKK, you will have it in your possession within 10 working days).
What I mean by strange is that:
– According to their website it can take 4 weeks.
– According to someone at the embassy it can take 6-8 weeks.
– According to a reader who had just applied for his passport, roughly 3 weeks, which actually corresponds to the proposed 4 weeks.
– But by paying a priority of 10 Euro it is suddenly only 5 days.
None of that 10 Euro is reflected in the consular rates. I think one should do it anyway.

No idea how one actually gets those 10 Euros.
In Amsterdam, an urgent procedure is easily 53 euros, I see.
Maybe they can decide that themselves?

The amount of 10 euros is actually too little to make urgency/priority effective. I think many will have no problem paying the 10 euros.
And if everyone chooses that Priority, what is the point of that? After all, who has priority?
If you really want to make a difference between urgent and normal, you have to do as in Belgium.
A regular passport costs 75 euros, urgent costs 240 euros or even super urgent costs 350 euros.
People will already think about this before opting for an emergency procedure.
Anyway, I just thought it was strange.
Last month I applied for a new passport on July 20 and received a message on August 7 that I could pick it up at the Embassy in Bangkok. Shipping wasn't a priority because I had plenty of time.
A waiting period between July 20 and August 7 seems very acceptable to me, but there is little to complain about.
Even if you have plenty of time 😉
NB. With a possible different term of an extension, the end date will remain the same for many years. This is especially essential for people who are not in Thailand all year round. Make sure your renewal date falls during a period when you would normally be in Thailand.
For me, it means that I have been applying for a new one for some time before my passport expired.
