Questioner: Guido

Soon I will again apply for my year extension with 1 re-entry. My passport is valid until 06/23 so I will have to apply for a new one in Belgium. My re-entry stamp will therefore be in my old passport, which they usually invalidate.

How do I solve this?

If you apply for the annual extension before June 22, you will receive another full year. After June 22, you will only get the remaining period until 06/23. For your information.

When applying for a new passport at your town hall, ask not to invalidate the pages with your visa, valid annual extension and valid re-entry in your old passport. Put a post-it or something on that so it's clear which pages they are.

You then leave with the new and old passport back to Thailand. When a visa is requested somewhere, show the new and old passport with the still valid extension and re-entry.

Upon arrival in Thailand, give both passports to the IO and say that there is still a valid extension and Re-entry in your old passport. The IO will normally know that if you issue 2 passports. He will then place an Arrival stamp in your new passport with the end date of your annual extension.

When you are back at your address, go to the immigration office one of the following days and ask there to put your data from your old passport into your new passport. They will then put all kinds of information in your new passport, such as with which visa you ever entered Thailand and your current extension. Re-entry in your case not because it is a Single and used, but if it would have been a Multiple re-entry, it will also be taken over.

Once that has happened, you no longer need the old passport and you can return it to your municipality the next time.

When transferring from the old to the new passport, you may be asked to provide proof that the new passport replaces the old one. Normally this is only asked if the passport was issued by the embassy, but you never know.

You can request such proof from your municipality when delivering your passport, but normally it will only issue it in Dutch. They are not obliged to deliver it in another language. If you can't take much with you because then you would have to have it translated and legalized again.

If you are registered at the embassy and the passport was issued by the embassy, that document is normally included automatically. But I understand from previous responses that the Belgian embassy also delivers this for those who are not registered at the embassy.

If I remember correctly you have to provide a full copy of your old passport and a copy of your current one. Maybe you can add that note from the municipality that says in Dutch that this new replaces the old. The embassy then normally prepares a document and it is accepted by immigration.

Perhaps there are Belgians who have recently renewed their passports in Belgium and they may be able to give you the latest update on that. Also regarding the statement that new replaces old.

Two years ago I had a new passport made in Belgium. I got the old one back intact. I thought the time before. Invalidating a passport like before with that cut off is no longer done I think (since that chip is in it I think)
My wife also had her passport renewed in Thailand a few months ago and she also received her old passport intact.

Proof that the new passport has been replaced is already in your new passport as far as I know. In any case, it says: This passport has been issued to replace passport nr.xxxxxx and also in English.

      Are you a Belgian?

    • fred says up

It is indeed in my wife's new Thai passport.

If it is also not in the Belgian passport, you are not making any progress as a Belgian and the person asking the question is a Belgian.

I received a new B passport in August 2020. There is indeed nothing indicated about a possible old passport.
In my wife's new Thai passport, the first page is a statement of the passport number and below that is official observations with the number of her old passport and the date it was issued.
Her previous one dates from 2019 and that med (also) was not there. However, on the first page of the previous one from 2014, there is a stamp canceled under observations.

Shouldn't passports of all countries be uniform?

There will certainly be international agreements on what must be stated about the person, but such as color and security, among other things, is the responsibility of the country.
If they were uniform, there would also be cartoon characters everywhere from Monday…
