Thailand Visa question No. 170/23: Emigrating to Thailand at the age of 48, which visa and what about extension?
Questioner: Francois
I am 48 years old and want to emigrate to Thailand to my Thai partner's home address. Now there are many forms of visas and methods to go to Thailand. The more I read, the more confused I become. What is the wisdom now, apply for a 90 day Non-Immigrant Visa O Visa (90 days stay) or apply for a Non-Immigrant Visa OA (long stay), which again has 2 options. or Non-Immigrant Visa OX (long stay).
If the first option Non-immigrant O Visa (90 days stay) visit family is chosen, what will happen after 1 year? If I emigrate, I still have no pension and no income. Only a savings account and investments as collateral. Is there a step-by-step plan somewhere where you should start? Can I get in touch with people who want to help or advise?

1. Regarding Non-immigrant OA or OX I can be brief. Are you not eligible yet? You must have also read that you have to be 50 years old. I don't know what you mean by “Applying for Non-Immigrant Visa OA (long stay) which again has 2 options” because there is only one option to obtain that visa. But as mentioned, you are not yet eligible for this
2. That leaves the Non-immigrant O Thai Marriage.
For this you must be officially married to a Thai. I hope that is what you mean by “partner”. (And also without “s”). You can apply for that visa because there is no age requirement. Of course, being married or having a Thai child as a parent or guardian. You can find the requirements here:
CATEGORY 2 : Visiting family in Thailand
.....
2. Visiting or staying with family residing in Thailand (more than 60 days)
VISA TYPE: Non-immigrant O Visa (90 days stay)
FEE: 70 EUR for single entry (3 months validity)

A Non-immigrant O Single entry is sufficient. Upon entry you will receive a residence period of 90 days.
3. You can then extend those 90 days by one year and you can repeat the annual extension annually.
Financially, it is sufficient to have an amount of 2 Baht in the bank at least 400 months before the application.
You will always find a list of further requirements at your immigration office. But if not, just contact me and I will give you the standard documents that are requested.
Normally you will first have an “under consideration” period. Usually 30 days. During that period they will come and see where you live and possibly do a small neighborhood survey.
Normally that is not a problem. If everything is in order, you will finally receive your annual extension. The “under consideration” period is included in this, so you will not gain or lose anything.
