Traveling with the tren in Thailand is an adventure. I enjoy it but that's personal. In this video you can see the train ride from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, this route is also widely used by backpackers.

The train in Thailand (State Railways of Thailand, SRT for short) is not exactly the fastest means of transport. You should see the arrival times on the timetable as an expected arrival time. These are no guarantees, especially on longer distances. The night trains in Thailand arrive on average three hours later than stated. Need to be somewhere on time? Then it is better to travel by bus or by plane.

It is especially the atmosphere around traveling by train in Thailand that appeals to me. You make contact with other travelers much more easily than on the bus or on the plane. Sleeping in the train is fine, the sleeping compartments are quite comfortable. The many hawkers with food and drinks and the restoration in the train are also nice to see.

made this trip in 1991, unforgettable impressions. Made a very conscious choice to do this in 3rd class, on rock-hard wooden benches. One of the most beautiful memories in 40 years of traveling through Thailand

Have traveled the route many times. Both BKK – Chiang Mai and vice versa. Always second class and with bed.
    Recommended.

Totally agree! Already done three times and it remains an adventure in itself!!! But you shouldn't be in a hurry. You are on vacation, don't forget!!!

Fantastic movie, great to see it again. Made the trip 18 years ago now in December again.
I just hope the toilets are cleaner now. They stank that was a pity. But the service was good! at night I couldn't sleep and looked outside. Fantastic. You go over bridges and stop at stations in the middle of the night and then the monks come to get food again. That was not with us, by the way.
And the best thing was the morning when you go through the slums in Bangkok and even on the rails the clothes are drying or rice. The trains run close to the slum houses. Experience!

I enjoy reading the many posts from and about Thailand. We will make the trip by train in September. That will be our first trip to Thailand. Because of all the wonderful stories I have double anticipation.
Thank you all for all the wonderful impressions you are already giving us.
