Thailand blog exists 4 years: Hip hip Hooray!

On October 10, 2009, Peter (not his real name) made his first posting on Thailandblog. Four years later, Thailandblog is the largest Thailand community in the Netherlands and Belgium with 230.000 visits and 75.804 unique visitors per month.

We owe that to Peter's unbridled efforts, because not a day could and cannot be missed. Every day there must be at least seven posts on the blog and every day comments must be reviewed by his alter ego, the moderator.

There weren't many days off. He was only able to escape during the period when he received assistance from two editors. They have now left. I just joined last year. A while ago, our khun Peter went to Paris for a long weekend with his Thai girlfriend Kan. He wrote to me after his return that he hadn't bothered with the blog for three (sic!) days. And that may be called a miracle for workaholic Mr. Thailand blog.

If you are curious how it all came about and what has happened in the past four years, I refer to the booklet The Best of Thailand Blog, which can still be ordered (see the advertisement on the homepage in the left column). You can read it all in detail there.

It only remains for me to compliment and congratulate Peter on his brainchild and wish him many more years of blogging. When Peter comes to Thailand for three months next year, we'll toast it (if he's not in Kan's arms, that is).

Dick van der Lugt
Editor-in-Chief

Captain Peter

We guest bloggers, commenters and other clickers can be under the illusion that we matter a little; without captain khun Peter we would have to go through life without a Thailand blog.

The captain and I, I can reveal, have an occasional and somewhat unruly relationship. That's my fault, of course, and that's why I've played the blog deserter a few times since I started as a guest blogger in 2010. What a mess people. It's like real love. You only really realize what you're missing after the thump of the slamming door.

Thailandblog has entered calmer waters after a somewhat turbulent period with changes in the editorial staff. Quality, diversity and professionalism have increased, which is not only due to the captain himself, but also to Dick van der Lugt, his helmsman.

It's a perfect blog marriage, in which the helmsman's prudence and journalistic considerations go hand in hand with the captain's energy and knowledge of the wonderful internet world. Add that to their knowledge of and affection for Thailand and it is clear that this blog leaves the competition in the embryonic stage.

Every reason to first congratulate both of them and then a little bit of all of us with this fourth birthday of Thailandblog. Is there anything left to be desired? Of course, if only because patting one's own chest with complacency is the quickest route to the graveyard of dead blogging illusions. For example, I think the discussions could be a bit more lively and pointy, but that is a matter of taste.

In any case, my personal wish list for this coming year of life contains more contributions about many facets of Thai daily life, less posturing about Thai women and relationship problems and, above all, fewer reader questions of the caliber Where is Thailand and how do I get there? With which I do not mean to suggest that violence should be done to the aim to offer everyone something of her or his liking on Thailandblog.

Even more reading and writing fun everyone and Peter and Dick, thanks!

The years go faster and faster, congratulations!!! Because of this drivel, the comment is now long enough to be posted…lol.

@ editors: can a short response that makes sense also have no content in the posting?

With 7 posts it is ready daily.
    For expat, tourist and hibernator.

    The news brought by Dick.
Statements by Peter often give a kick.
The amount of information broadens your Thai view.

The diaries paint a varied picture.
They show why Thailand never gets boring.
The many comments show that the blog is alive.

    many more years,
    Jacques

Nice Jacques! We hereby appoint you as 'Poet of the Thailandblog'.

      • Jacques says up

That could be a new edition: The best poems of Thailandblog.
I have to talk to Dick about that, because he can do something about it too.

    Congratulations.
I also look forward to the news from thailandblog every day with impatience.
I have heard from a confidential source that within 6 years, to celebrate your 10th anniversary, a flower bouquet will be issued.
In 96 years, the mayor will personally present you with a gift.
    Hopefully thailandblog still exists!
    Heartily.

    Autumn greetings from Belgium.

Congratulations. It is a daily pleasure to read. More importantly, you also learn something from it every day. Just carry on like this.

Personally, I am deeply impressed every day by the very extensive news update by Dick van der Lugt. It cannot be otherwise than that it takes many hours to present all the information in pleasant, readable pieces. And that every day! I think it's a phenomenal achievement!

    Congratulations !. , including all employees !

Also congratulations for the idea of doing a content upgrade and not allowing questions like; I have a Thailand flight ticket, what can I see there?. Or, I want to do business in the Netherlands with Thai products. Who will tell me how to get rich with it?

You have good reason to celebrate.
I would if I were you. CHEERS !! great martin

    • Khan Peter says up

Dear, Thailandblog is for everyone. Most visitors to Thailandblog are still tourists from the Netherlands and Belgium. They simply have different questions than expats. And if you don't find a reader's question interesting, just don't read it.

      • rebell says up

I assume you are celebrating? Congratulations on the birthday.

Nice statement. Zitate; DO NOT read a reader's question to find out if it is interesting?.
Good idea. I'm going to try it right away. To your health and many more years. rebel.

        • Khan Peter says up

Thanks for the congratulations. The title and summary state what the question is about. It therefore does not seem difficult to me to determine whether or not something is interesting to read.

          • rebell says up

He who can read is in definite advantage. Your summary is fine. I didn't say anything about it at all. It's about what some bloggers write. Then everyone can respond, but if only positive content is posted (determined by the editors), the blog has more content, I think. This also applies to some reader questions that are still posted despite the core of nonsense. That is why I appreciate the positive plans to improve this in the future. It also means that this is not just me. I hope you still have enough champagne. rebel

I've only known Thailandblog for a few months.
Thanks to this blog I have been able to gather a lot of information about the country I am in love with.
It must take an incredible amount of energy and time to bring so much varied information every day.
Congratulations and thanks to the team behind the Thailandblog

  15. LOUISE says up

    Congratulations Khun Peter and Dick,

Admiration for your efforts to come up with a new subject every day.
This way a lot of people can write off their annoyances and the occasional splash of vinegar, that also keeps things lively.

We hope to enjoy it for a long time to come.

  19. khunflip says up

    Congratulations to Peter!

But eh… that you are now the largest Thai-Holland community place is also partly due to the sudden disappearance of Thaiportal.nl. It suddenly went off the air a little over a year ago and hasn't been online since. Very unfortunate, because I have contributed for years with all kinds of useful tips and facts about Thailand. In addition, uploaded a lot of beautiful photo albums and clips. I found the whole design and look of thaiportal.nl much more user-friendly and attractive than this, so there is still a lot to gain in this area.

    • Khan Peter says up

Dear Khunflip, there is no relation to our growth and the disappearance of Thaiportal. Even when Thaiportal still existed, Thailandblog already had more visitors. The webmaster stopped because he no longer had time for it and saw many visitors leave for Thailandblog.
That you found Thaiportal more attractive is your right. Fortunately, many Thailand enthusiasts thought / think differently about it and are now very happy with Thailandblog.

    • martin says up

The amount of work it entails is certainly worth great appreciation. Whether the content reflects that is a completely different question, Khunflip, but not today. Knowing that a large group of people have fun every day is worth an extra appreciation. Imagine, you don't have a Thailand blog. . what are you going to do then? Therefore, celebrate and move on. top martin

  21. Pim says up

I still remember that 4 years ago I typed the blog once a day, that was enough to visit at the time.
Now to make sure you don't miss anything, it's 6x a day.
I keep asking myself, where do Dick and Khun Peter get the energy from?
In addition to what they post, they also read submissions that are out of line .
Personally, I would have thrown the ax at it.
I'm starting to believe that we the existence of Thailandblog.nl a good spirit contributes to that.
I think the ghost is called KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN .
What Can Can Can Only Can.

In any case, I hope to enjoy this blog for a long time to come.

  22. Jose says up

Congratulations, I myself have been a fan and reader of Thailandblog from the very beginning. Almost daily I read the blog sometimes I save them for a few days (lack of time) and when I'm in Thailand I read them daily (more time). Since January 2012 I keep all expenses (digitally) why I do that I don't know but find it valuable. Dear editors continue this Thai success.
