When you stay in Bangkok, it is best to use public transport such as the metro.

Public transport Bangkok

Public transport in Bangkok is well organized and has many advantages:

  • it's cheap;
  • easily accessible;
  • safe;
  • comfortable (air conditioning);
  • and you do not suffer from traffic jams.

MRTA Subway

In July 2004, Bangkok's first subway line opened. The current metro network in Bangkok has a length of 80 km. The BTS runs above ground (24 km/23 stations), underground the MRTA (21 km/8 stations).

Almost everyone knows the BTS Skytrain, but the metro is just as convenient. Especially the people who want to get to the train station in Bangkok quickly journey the MRTA subway is a good option. You get off under Hualamphong (Bangkok's central train station). The subway is also a good choice if you want to visit the famous Chatuchak weekend market.

Route subway

The subway line runs from Hualamphong Central Station to the east towards Silom and Lumpini Park. The underground line then curves north towards the Sukhumvit area and Chatuchak Park. The terminus is Bang Sue.

There are three places where you can transfer between the metro and the Skytrain, namely:

  • Chatuchak and Sukhumvit soi 21 (Asoke) on the Sukhumvit line;
  • Silom/Saladeang on the Silom line.

You can also transfer from the Metro to the Airport Rail Link (the 'red' non-stop Express Line). You get off at metro station Phetchaburi. You then have to walk about 300 meters to Makkasan Station (City Air Terminal) for the Airport Rail Link.

The Bangkok Metro operates daily from 06.00am to midnight. During peak hours (06.00:09.00 AM to 16.30:19.30 AM and 5:10 PM to XNUMX:XNUMX PM), more trains are used and the waiting time is less than XNUMX minutes. During off-peak hours, the waiting time is less than XNUMX minutes.

Pricing

The price of a one-way ticket depends on the distance covered. Adults pay between 15 and up to 40 Baht. For children and seniors it is between 8 and 20 Baht. Adults can buy a day ticket for 120 Baht, which gives you unlimited use of the metro. You pay at a machine (the instruction is simple and in English). After payment you will receive a black plastic coin. With this you can open the entrance gates to the platform.
