On July 20, the international train service between Bangkok and Vientiane began its maiden run and immediately reached full capacity with 300 passengers on board. This new connection strengthens the transport networks between Thailand and Laos, significantly improving regional connectivity.
Upon the train's arrival at Nong Khai station, station master Veera Charoenrang, together with a team of immigration officials, ensured a smooth completion of the border formalities. The process, including immigration, customs and health checks, was completed in about 40 minutes, allowing passengers to complete the last 20 minutes of their journey to Khamsawat station in Vientiane.
Various train classes
The service offers a variety of travel accommodations to suit different preferences and budgets:
- Third class fan-cooled seats: Available for 281 baht.
- Second class air-conditioned seats: Available for 574 baht.
- Second class air-conditioned sleeping cars: Prices range from 784 to 874 baht for the upper and lower berths respectively.
All services depart from Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, with fare reductions for passengers boarding at intermediate stops.
Booking and preparation
Tickets for the Bangkok-Vientiane train route can be booked up to 180 days in advance, providing flexibility for both last minute plans and planned travel. Passengers are advised to ensure they have all necessary documents for the border crossings at Nong Khai and Vientiane stations.
This new train link provides a comfortable and efficient way to travel between Thailand and Laos, and marks a significant step forward in improving infrastructure and ease of travel in the region.

Does anyone know the site where you can book online?
Now I'm especially curious about the equipment to be used and the total travel time. Is the same type of HSL used as for the Vientane-China HSL? That one looks pretty slick.
