Demonstrations cost the tourism sector a lot of money
By Hans Bosch
The Thai Chamber of Commerce fears a domino effect due to the ongoing demonstrations by the Red Shirts in Bangkok. According to the Chamber of Commerce, more than 70 percent of tourists have canceled a planned trip to the Thai capital and the vast majority of hotel rooms on Rattanakosin Island, where the demonstrations are taking place, are empty. As a result of the unrest, 20 charter flights have now been canceled Thailand canceled and more than 30 countries have warned tourists to avoid Thailand.
According to the Chamber of Commerce, the private sector in Thailand suffers most from the political situation and layoffs in the tourist sector cannot be avoided if the demonstrations continue for a long time. Tourists bring in Thailand about 50 billion euros annually. More than 1.000 booked hotel rooms are canceled in Bangkok every day. The Chamber of Commerce fears investments and declining exports if the political instability continues.
For Saturday, March 27, another large demonstration is scheduled for the red shirts. They demand the dissolution of parliament and new elections. Some of them are also demanding the return of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was deposed in 2006. He still has to serve two years in prison for abuse of power and has been 'stripped' of about half of his assets of 1,4 billion euros by the Thai Supreme Court. Thaksin says he is staying in Dubai and only wants to negotiate with Prime Minister Abhisit if he gets a safe conduct to enter and leave Thailand.

Good idea Wallie.
Even though the airport was closed in December 2008. Still, I went to Bangkok via Singapore and Utapau and lived there for a month. I didn't see a single protester!
Have fun and enjoy it
