Football for sissies, says columnist Andrew Biggs Brunch, the Sunday magazine Bangkok Post, futsal. He will not be very popular with that, because this form of futsal is quite popular Thailand.

But the Thai futsal team is not doing much in the Futsal World Cup 2012, which is currently in full swing.

In group A (four teams) it finished third and thanks to the results in the other groups, it reached the second round with a bang. But in that it was swept away 7-1 by the Spanish team. The three previous world championships also failed to deliver a place on the podium, because then the Thai team went down ingloriously in the first round.

There doesn't seem to be a blessing on futsal. The new Bangkok Futsal Arena was not completed on time and when it was completed according to the Bangkok municipality, FIFA rejected it. It was not safe enough and not all facilities were in order.

The governor of Bangkok reacted as if stung by a wasp - not surprising, because a new governor will be elected in January and this fiasco is hardly a recommendation for his re-election. Ruling party Pheu Thai smells blood, because it is trying to get a foot in the door in the Bangkok city council, which is dominated by opposition party Democrats.

Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra defends himself in an extensive response in the Bangkok Post (Saturday, November 10). He gives 'the facts', but a critical analysis of his text shows that he omitted the most important fact, namely that the Cup was awarded to Thailand back in March 2010.

According to Sukhumbhand, construction, which began in January this year, was delayed by last year's floods. But parts of Bangkok were not flooded all year round and the planned construction site remained bone dry all the while.

For girls I believe? I have been chairman of futsal in Terneuzen for 12 years with 24 participating teams. Trust me it can be hard at times. Referees had their hands full. The Zeeland championship was also organized and that went smoothly. Everything was ready on time. There was even an English team that came to play an exhibition match against the Zeeland team.
If they are still looking for an organizer in Bangkok, they can call me.

@ Gerrie Another word for sissy is sissy, which is an extremely derogatory term. Perhaps we would say: broken leg.

So Biggs doesn't think much of the game, but according to other sources it requires a lot of tactics.

You should not take the English seriously, and certainly not on tactics. I would turn tactics into technique. Without technique, no futsal!

Totally agree, math. Look, some rugby fans will think football is a sport for sissies. And Thai boxers can think rugby boys are sissies again. That way we can keep going… There are several aspects that make a competition interesting. I think Biggs just wants to make a bold statement. A bit like Gert Jan Verbeek, the AZ football coach, when an interviewer asked him what he thought of women's football. Verbeek replied: “Women's football? That's a waste of the grass…”
