About eight years ago, a young Amsterdam bank employee promised to arrange a dinner for his friends in his apartment. The problem, however, was that Robin Vogelaar could not cook. He decided to treat his group of friends to an evening of eating pancakes. It became a great success.

When he was in Hong Kong for work not long after, he organized a Dutch Pancake Night for colleagues, business associates and acquaintances. That was the first of a long series, which has now long passed the 500 Dutch Pancake Nights in many countries around the world. Such a Dutch Pancake Night usually takes place in a catering establishment, but it can also take place in an orphanage or other institution or at someone's home, if there is an opportunity for Robin to show his skills of baking Dutch pancakes.

Thailand

After, among others, Indonesia and the Philippines, a series of Dutch Pancake Nights in Thailand is now on the programme. It looks like this (for now):

  • Nov. 24 at The Fat Cow on the Roof, Bangkok
  • November 28, Chon Buri
  • December 1 at The Hideaway Guest House and Bar, Pattaya
  • December 4 Nakhon Pathom
  • December 6, Surat Thani
  • December 8 Phuket City
  • December 12, Krabi City
  • December 15 Hat Yai

Robin is busy preparing for his tour through Thailand. At the moment, only the locations of Bangkok and Pattaya are known. You will soon find the others on the Facebook page of Dutch Pancake Events, where you can also find the details of such a Dutch Pancake Night.

Pattaya

Last night at the pool billiards tournament, Andy Hall, owner of the Hideaway Guesthouse and Bar, was also present, who had telephone contact with Robin Vogelaar, who was still in the Philippines, during a break in the tournament. I also spoke to Robin, but more importantly, the two gentlemen agreed that the Dutch Pancake Night will take place on December 1 at The Hideaway Guesthouse and Bar. A beautiful location, I will be there with some friends for sure.

What does it cost?

Nothing, nada, niente! Nothing has to be paid for Robin's "performance". In fact, Robin pays for the ingredients for the pancakes out of his own pocket. The host and guests are then expected to provide the “toppings”. Other snacks will certainly be offered and of course guests will have to pay for their own drinks. I myself have the idea that at the end of the evening there is a bit of "hat" being passed around.

Background Robin Vogelaar

Robin loves to travel, he has been devoted to it for years. His job at a bank gives him the opportunity to do so, but he can also be found in one or the other city in Europe during his days off. If he is outside Europe for his work, he sticks to it for a few days for his hobby of baking pancakes that has gotten out of hand. He lives, as it were, out of his suitcase, he buys a cheap ticket and all he wants is for his host to arrange a place to sleep for him. No expensive hotels, a room with a bed is sufficient.

Non commercial

Robin has no commercial intention whatsoever with his Dutch Pancake Night. You can see his explanation of the how and why in this video, which was recorded during a Dutch Pancake Night in Abidjan; www.youtube.com/

Finally

I started looking a little further myself and found a number of newspaper articles about “the Amsterdammer, who bakes brown pancakes all over the world”. Below one of them: www.nrc.nl/
