Lopburi is the capital of the province of the same name Thailand. It is located about 150 km north-east of Bangkok. It is one of the oldest and most atmospheric cities in Thailand with numerous historical sights, the origins of which sometimes date back to the 6th century.

Lopburi is also the city of the apes (macaques) which, because they live in the temples of the city, are considered 'sacred animals' by the Thai.

Every year a special festival for the monkeys is organized in Lopburi. The festival takes place on the last weekend of November and is a major attraction for locals and foreign visitors. The festivities include a 'monkey tea party' where the macaques are spoiled with sweets, fruit, eggs, cucumbers and bananas.

The locals feed the monkeys because they believe it brings good luck. Well, that may be right, because crowds of tourists flock to it and that brings in money…

Perhaps the festivities will be somewhat tempered this year.
If I am very honest I have to say that during my holidays in Pattaya I regularly made plans to go on an excursion to Lopburi for a few days.
The monkeys and the history really appeal to me.
It never happened and I may regret it.
Oh well, there must always be something left to be desired.
