Calling from abroad with your own mobile phone is very expensive. When you enter Thailand stays for one holiday or a business trip, it is much cheaper to buy a new SIM card from a Thai provider.

Always buy a prepaid SIM card, which saves you subscription costs.

The most important tips:

  • Purchase a prepaid Thai SIM card upon arrival at the airport. This can possibly be linked to an Internet Prepaid bundle for, for example, 1 month. You can choose from Dtac, True move, AIS, etc.
  • If you first enter country code 004, you can call the Netherlands for 5 baht (€ 0,13) per minute.
  • Internet costs an average of 399 baht for a 1 Gb bundle (100 baht = € 2,58).
  • The costs for mobile calls within Thailand are very low. With a call credit of 300 baht you can call for quite a long time.
  • Top-up cards are available everywhere, for example at 7-Eleven. The top-up instruction is in both English and Thai.

Buy mobile phone in Thailand

There are sometimes complaints that an (older?) Western mobile phone does not always work properly in Thailand. Then buy a new mobile phone in Thailand. They cost next to nothing. Do you want to be even cheaper? You can also buy used mobile phones at the various stalls. Thais are so obsessed with the latest devices that they sometimes exchange the device for the very latest model after a few months.

At MBK in Bangkok you have the most choice. MBK is also an excellent place to buy mobile phone accessories, they have a huge selection of chargers, batteries, cases, and other accessories.

For those who, like me, find it rather difficult to top up such a ticket, just ask the cashier at the 7/11, they always do it for you, no problem!

    • Jan Willem says up

I've been doing this for several years now and it works wherever you are in Thailand. Most of them also show you the confirmation on your phone that the top-up has actually happened.

How exactly is that 004 in front of it? Will it be 004316…..? I couldn't do it last time

    • Danny says up

That's right, I always call 009316….. it's the same principle. Good luck with it Danny.

When I arrive in HuaHin I buy a thai sim card from true move and at the telephone office also for sale at some photo shops an international telephone card of 300 baht with which you can call landline numbers for 2 baht per minute and to mobile for 13 baht bath. You must first enter the number of the card and then 00931 then the prefix for mobile after 00931 the mobile number without 0

I have a question… My girlfriend has 1-2 call. Now I have that in Thailand too. Since I'm only in Thailand a few days a month, I always buy her an internet package for about 600 Baht (I don't remember exactly), which allows her to use the internet for a whole month with her mobile. That works pretty well until my next trip.
Since I can usually only stay for three days, I have another package. I only pay 100 baht, can access the internet all the time (75 Mb, enough for e-mail use) but also extend the use of my SIM card every time.
Does anyone know of a better system than the two forms we have? In itself I am satisfied, but I like to be open to the experience of others.
And just off topic, who has good tips for fast fixed internet connections in Thailand?

Question: are separate micro-SIM cards available for prepaid telephone calls? The iphone4s requires this type of SIM card.

    Thank you in advance.

    • Harold Rolloos says up

Just go to one of the many shops that sell mobile phones. Most of them do have a pair of nippers to cut a normal SIM card to a micro SIM.

    • carlo ham says up

yes you can buy from all providers when you arrive at the airport in bangkok.

buy an interSIM card from True-move and you can call the Netherlands for 1 bath/minute

    • Johan says up

The costs with the intersim card are indeed 1 bath if you call a Thai number in Thailand.
Calling to the Netherlands costs 5 baht per minute to landlines and 10 baht to mobile numbers. This using the prefix 006

every provider has a different code: for Dtac it is 004 and then just 31 with the number

True move is 006 and then 31 with the number

AIS/12 call is 005 and then the number.

every provider has service packs for 1 day, week or month.
    both prepaid and postpaid.
Walk into a shop of one of the providers and they will help you.

You can buy top-up tickets at any 7/eleven and usually also top up online.
Do you have a Thai account (easiest to obtain at Kasikorn) you can top up via tablet or internet banking.

An item will follow soon for copy phones and tablets.
    is already with the editors

We have arranged a good stable internet connection (fixed) here with TOT.

Is there anyone who can tell me how it works to call cheaply from Thailand to Belgium. Is this also 004 or 009 and then the country code 032 or another number?
    Thanks in advance

    Eddy

    • Johan says up

For this you use the same codes:
Dtac so 004 and then country code 32 and the area code.

Costs 5 baht to landlines and 10 baht to mobile numbers

For the other codes see the information from the other providers

    • Johan says up

      response for Tom,
With an intersim card you call the Netherlands for 5 baht to fixed numbers, 10 baht to mobile numbers. (using the 006)
The 1 bath you are talking about only applies in Thailand to a Thai number also from true move.
So not for 1 bath to the Netherlands!

Other services that you can use are the so-called VOIP services such as VOIP buster (0.013 cents per minute) Viber (free) Line (free) or natural Skype. Especially VOIP buster is recommended. You buy call credit on their website and call fixed mobile numbers via the internet. The person on the other line does not need to have internet, which is also useful if, for example, you call people with poor internet, or no internet at all. Line is usually clear, but nothing compared to Viber and Skype.

For that reason, never buy a 2nd hand mobile. The battery is usually worn out, but settings and other residual junk also remain in the device.
An expert friend showed me this at such a seller.
Good advice; The telephones in the Netherlands cost almost nothing anymore (from 18 Euro)
buy it here and put a Thai SIM card in it. I have 1-2 call fine, recharge at 7-eleven or Familymarkt.
Your other phone just keeps you with your Dutch number (just in case)

Perhaps another easy/cheap tip to call Thailand from the Netherlands.

With your normal Dutch mobile phone to a Thai mobile phone! calls for only 1 cent p/m. (+ or the costs from my call bundle, but they are only 2,3 cents with me)

You first call a 020 number and then you enter your pin code followed by the Thai telfnr and voila connection, so no more calling those expensive 0900 numbers, line quality is sometimes reasonable but usually 100% good.

I don't have a landline so this is perfect for me, and I don't mind if my girlfriend calls mothers for half an hour.

Currently they have an offer buy for 10, - and get 20, - calling credit
    Absolutely recommended. http://www.belzo.nl

  11. Peter says up

Also try Telediscount from the Netherlands 0900 then 1535 wait for the automatic connection then 66 and phone number. Cost 01 cents per minute !!

  12. frank says up

buy a deedail card: http://deedial.com/web3/en/home.php calling to landline 1 baht per minute to mobile is expensive 14,5 baht, have been using this for 3 years and am very satisfied with it, doesn't matter if you have truemove dtac or ais.

  13. Pear Stone says up

NB. If you call an 0900 number with your mobile, KPN will add no less than 31 cents per minute to the costs of the 0900 number for the connection! Other providers also charge extra. These extra costs are not charged from a fixed line.

  14. Robbie says up

1 2 Call and True Move have little or no coverage in the Chiang Rai and Maesai area! DTAC, on the other hand, does. In my opinion, this provider has the best national coverage, both for mobile phones and for the Internet via a SIM card in the iPad.

  15. Jan Nagelhout says up

Never noticed anything and have been coming here for 15 years or so…..
We are in Mae Sai a lot for trade, beautiful place, and not too many farangs
But phone always worked great there.....

  16. marcow says up

It is best, for a longer stay in Thailand, to take out a Skype world subscription. This costs 10 euros per month and then you can call around the world for free to fixed numbers (via the computer). If you purchase a Skype number here (25 euros per year), you can set Skype so that this number is transferred to your Thai mobile (free).
This way someone calls a number in the Netherlands and is forwarded to your Thai mobile at no extra cost.

  17. I would like to give a tip to make it EVEN cheaper. You buy the same SIM card with data bundle.

Install the MobileVoip app and create an account at VoipDiscount.com. Then your calls to the Netherlands (via the app) are FREE! Just let MobileVoip call you back and your calls will start completely free of charge.

    This also works in America!

Hi I'm Piet De Ridder from Belgium and I'm staying in Hua Hin for 5 months. Can someone tell me to make cheap calls from Thailand to Belgium. For mobile it is first 0900 and then 32? Please correct answer. Greetings from Hua Hin

  19. Pim says up

    Pete .
If you have the option to do it via Skype, you are completely cheap.
If the person you are calling also has Skype , it costs nothing at all .

  20. Sandra says up

HI – I have an Iphone 5 and would prefer to buy a prepaid sim and especially internet bundle for a stay in Thailand. Is that possible?
    Greetings Sandra

    • Vigo says up

You can buy a prepaid sim anywhere in Thailand (7-Eleven, Telewiz, AIS, etc). For example, go to a Telewiz shop, where you can also buy an internet bundle. Prices (approximate) for internet bundle: 300b for 1 Gb, 700b for 3 Gb and 1000b for 5 Gb.
