Today on Thailandblog attention to another real classic: “The Beach“. This book is a novel written by British author Alex Garland and was first published in 1996. The book quickly became a bestseller and won several awards.
In 2000, the book was made into a movie directed by Danny Boyle, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The novel explores themes of escapism, utopia and the dark side of human nature, offering a fascinating look at what can happen when a group of people try to create their ideal world.
The story
The story follows young British backpacker Richard, who, along with a French couple, Étienne and Françoise, set out in search of a remote, pristine beach in Thailand. Richard receives a card from an enigmatic, mentally disturbed Scottish traveler named Daffy. Daffy kills himself, but leaves Richard with the map that leads to the hidden beach.
Driven by curiosity and adventure, Richard, Étienne and Françoise decide to follow the map. They discover an idyllic lagoon and a small community of international travelers living together in harmony, far from the outside world. At first, the island paradise seems to be the perfect escape. However, as time passes, the dark sides of both the community and the island itself begin to surface.
Background
"The Beachexplores the consequences of pursuing a utopia and confronts the reader with the inherent flaws of human nature. The novel poses the question of whether a utopian society is really possible, or whether the human propensity for selfishness, violence and paranoia will ultimately undermine any attempt at harmony.
The remote island is used in the book as a symbol of both physical and psychological escapism. The characters try to escape the pressures and stresses of modern society, only to discover that they bring their problems and demons to the island with them. Instead of a new beginning, they find an isolated world where their struggles and fears are magnified.
Adverse consequences of the popularity of the book and the film
“The Beach” was praised for its rich, vivid descriptions of Thailand's landscape and backpacking culture in the 90s. However, the book also impacted the tourism industry, with an increase in tourists seeking their own pristine beaches in Southeast Asia. This led to discussions about the environmental impact of tourism and the responsibility of both travelers and authors to promote the conservation of natural habitats.
“The Beach” remains an influential and gripping book that forces readers to contemplate the limits of utopia, the complexity of human nature and the impact of tourism on the environment. Alex Garland's novel is both an exciting adventure and a profound reflection on the dark side of our desires and dreams. With its compelling story and powerful themes, “The Beach” remains an enduring reader favorite and raises important questions about our relationship to the world around us.
Leonardo DiCaprio himself critical of the film
Remarkably, Leonardo DiCaprio himself does not want to be reminded of the film. He has expressed some reservations about his experiences filming “The Beach” in interviews. At the time, part of Maya Bay beach on Phi Phi Leh Island was modified to create the film's paradisiacal image. The filmmakers removed vegetation and transferred sand to widen the beach, leading to criticism from environmentalists. Although the filmmakers later took remedial action, the production caused a lot of damage to the environment. As a passionate environmentalist, DiCaprio will regret his involvement in a project that had negative consequences for the environment.
Leonardo DiCaprio has become one of the most respected actors in Hollywood since “The Beach,” with an impressive array of roles and accomplishments to his credit. He feels that his work in later films better reflects his artistic vision and acting talent, making him less eager to be reminded of a film that has not received the same degree of appreciation and success.

Fun fact
What many do not know is that Alex Garland did not get his idea and inspiration for the book “The Beach” at Maya Beach on Koh Phi Phi, but during a visit to Ang Thong National Park. Ang Thong (Mu Koh Angthong National Marine), is a national park located 31 km northwest of Koh Samui. The protected area covers an area of 102 km² and consists of 42 islands. The name of the park, Ang Thong, or 'Golden Bowl', refers to the blue-green seawater lagoon Talay Nai on Koh Mae Ko. It is a kind of lake surrounded by steep limestone rocks. The scenic lake can be reached from Koh Mae Ko beach. Gardner was so impressed by the beauty of this paradise that he used it as input for his bestseller.
The book and film are still for sale, both new and second-hand.
