Cycling through Bangkok with Co van Kessel (video)
For more than 23 years, the company of the late Co van Kessel has been a household name in Bangkok when it comes to bicycle tours. What started as a hobby and out of love for the city grew into Bangkok's first bicycle tour company.
It is one of the best excursions you can undertake as a tourist: cycling in Bangkok. You will get to know a part of the Thai capital that you would otherwise not quickly discover.
The bicycle tours in Bangkok are safe and suitable for all ages. The Thai guides speak several languages and have years of experience. Cycle along through a maze of alleys, so narrow that even the Tuk Tuk can't get through. You will go to places in Bangkok that few tourists have ever seen. Along the way you will discover the smell of spices, the cultural sites, temples and markets. Then cross the ancient Chao Phraya River by boat to the lush Prapadeang Park, better known as the “lungs of Bangkok”.
You end up in a completely different world, all in all a unique experience.
What a beautiful movie. Years ago we also made this bike tour. Great, also this ode to a very special man, namely Co van Kessel. And how nice that he is still remembered daily.
Highly recommended! Have experienced this several times. Unfortunately I fell ill during the last one, but the guides took care of me nicely and ensured that I was neatly returned to the hotel. Hats off
I have also made this trip 3 times, really nice.
Once I got sick at the flower market, but a taxi was neatly arranged for me, with a guaranteed normal price that brought us back to our hotel and they didn't want anything for the tour, of course we gave the guides a good tip
For the less fortunate
And very good alternative around 100 baht
Is the couch surfing
bike tour

I also undertook this fun and sweaty trip in April 2015, is well guided, through all kinds of alleys, Chinese market, crossing by boat or bridge, via Fox traveling from ANWB, well organized, you should do it, fun experience, gr Maarten
Really very nice, this bike ride. One of the highlights we have experienced. Chinatown, the small alleys, Leprosy colony, Chinese temple, etc etc… It stays with you years later.
In the 90s I personally knew Co and started his cycling trips through Bangkok. I once cycled through Bangkok/surroundings with Paul van Vliet and the then chairman of the NVT led by Co van Kessel and it was a super experience. At that time each participant received a red cap from Co with the legendary letters: BEF and stands for Bangkok's First Cycling Club !! Beautiful memories…….
I knew Co from about 25 years ago. .he once sold his company (I was there) to Michel Hoes, they started the tour at the Sukhumvit Road soi 26 at the time. .Co left for the Philippines, he did not have his permit in order. . a little later he came back and started again under his name (against the agreement) near China Town . .after his death, some Thai acquaintances took over the company and are successful with it. . (they don't know the history either)
Michel Hoes sits with his company ABC ( http://www.realasia.net/?lang=nl ) still on sukhumvit road soi 26 . .and is also doing great. . knew Dutch people, such as the NL football team, Antje and Romy Monteiro etc. cycled at ABC. .
Another Dutchman in another place (and in more places in Thailand) organizes bicycle tours. .NL
André Breuer, with https://bangkokbiking.com/bangkok/ . . !
Indeed Gerald,
I know the late Co too! With its ups and downs.
I also went on a few bike rides with Michiel Hoes from ABC tours and they were really better than those of Co!
I don't know Adré's Tour yet, but I will try it.
But if you really want to cycle in Thailand, please contact Etiën Daniels, a Belgian who has lived in Chiangmai for at least 30 years and runs “ClickandTravel”
He can really arrange EVERYTHING from a city tour to, guided or not, multi-day cycling trips through Nrd Thailand.
Has super-maintained bicycles, like new, and also arranges overnight stays if necessary.
You only have to indicate how many km you want to cycle per day.
I went cycling with Co van Kessel for the third time on August 13 because the previous 2 times (2012 and 2016) were so beautiful. What a disappointment now!! No more longtail boat to the other side. No draft through the green lung. No hot food but a bag of chips and a soft drink. The route through Chinatown was fun and then it was over. Not a nice route, lots of getting off and crossing roads and 3 stops: one at a Watt, one for a snack and one at the grave of Co. This was the three hour trip. So NO more recommended. Very unfortunate because as it is shown on the cideo it was real. Not anymore.
Thanks for this update. Was planning on doing it based on the fun video. Shame. Do you know a better alternative?
Dear Stu
I know there are several providers. They were all founded by former employees of Co van Kessel. Google it. I have no experience with them, so in theory it could be disappointing here too. I would say pay attention to the latest reviews.
If you really want to enjoy cycling, come cycling at ABC Amazing Bangkok Cyclist. Feel free to check out the link below:
https://www.facebook.com/ABCAmazingBangkokCyclist/videos/2009288495748478/ because then you see what awaits you, among other things.
Success guaranteed.
Hope to see you soon, coffee is always ready.
Michael Hoes
Yes Stu,
Michael has already responded.
But I as one of his customers also think that he offers a super trip and cheaper than CVK.
He was recommended to me by Etiën Daniels, but that was about 10 years ago.
Enjoy the trip
Another Dutchman has been fully focusing on E-bike tours in Chiang Mai for a year or two. Forgot his name, but look it up http://www.buzzybeebike.com. Cycled with them and had a great morning!
Otherwise, just go on a discovery tour yourself, by bike or on foot and then see where you end up instead of cycling / walking as a herd animal in a group.
If you 'get lost', don't worry, you are always somewhere in a suburban area of Greater Bangkok and drinks and food are available almost everywhere, even in the most remote areas.
Yes Sir Charles, that is very good advice! Just go out and let yourself be surprised by what/who you meet – also my style!
Maybe good for the green lung, but I wouldn't do that for the other part. You really have to know where the little bangers are otherwise you will have to deal with motorized traffic all the time.
Did last year too. The bike ride is fun, you get to see a whole different side of Bangkok.
Unfortunately, slower participants such as children and the elderly are not taken into account, making it a race to the end and the slower participants are just trying to keep up. It would be better to divide groups into faster participants and slower participants.
First bike ride in Bangkok with ABC 15 years ago (www.realasia.net)
In the following years I made a trip with Michiel almost every year, always different and always great.
Booked at Co van Kessel a few years ago out of curiosity.
What a disappointment, a crappy trip past a dump and the skytrain.
During rush hour you even had to take your bike into the skytrian, what a drama.
Don't be fooled by this beautiful video, if you want a really good bike ride through Bangkok you should definitely book with ABC!
Kind of strange that someone here is going through the z..k. with the case and successors of Co.
At the beginning of the year we had people left over from the Netherlands who had already covered a few kilometers on their bicycles and shared in different worlds and who were full of praise for the bicycle tour after a tour.
I have not been there myself but know these people through and through and if it was not the case they would have said so.
Is Alfons here making an attempt to take their work away from those people and is he the A from ABC??
No Tom
He simply gives an objective picture of what goes on in Co v Kessel's business.
And have your cycling friends compared it to other bicycle providers?
Apparently not, given more negative reactions today.
And the best advertisement is still: word of mouth!!
Thank you Alfons for your feedback, we at ABC Amazing Bangkok Cyclist try to make something beautiful every day and every tour, so never the same standard round because all our customers are different. Our bicycles that are checked weekly are from the Trek brand, so extremely comfortable bicycles (mountain and city bikes) and in different sizes so that even taller people can still cycle very comfortably.
Read on this blog that you can also cycle through Bangkok yourself, however, and that is one of the reasons why we do not rent bicycles because people underestimate that traffic is not designed for cyclists and people often think “Dutch” of “I have priority” and driving on the left side. Looking at google maps with a mobile phone in hand (which is also not allowed in the Netherlands) is absolutely not recommended. The back streets that ABC Amazing Bangkok Cyclist cycles through are often not on google maps. So if you want to cycle safely through Bangkok, then come with us.
A guaranteed success for 28 years.
For a reservation, please visit our website: http://www.realasia.net and you will get a super fast reply.
Hopefully see you soon and a delicious cup of coffee is always waiting for you.
Michael Hoes
Booked a bike tour with Van Kessel for the first time in January.
Liked very much. Cycle at a leisurely pace through narrow streets and China town.
Along the way we stopped a few times at a temple and for something to eat/drink. Very nice guides too
Not along a garbage dump as I read here in 1 of the comments
