Sukhothai historical park

If you are a lover of history, architecture and culture, you should definitely visit the Sukhothai Historical Park. This ancient capital of Thailand therefore has many sights such as beautiful buildings, palaces, Buddha statues and temples.

The Thai founded their independent state S around 1238, the beginning of the Sukhothai Period. The Sukhothai period lasted from 1238 to 1378. In the 13th century, the Thai developed into a dominant power in the region, slowly breaking away from the existing Khmer and Mon kingdoms. This era was called "the dawn of happiness" by incumbent rulers.

It was the Golden Age of Thai history, with an ideal Thai state in a land of plenty, ruled by patriotic and benevolent kings. The most famous of these was King Ramkamhaeng the Great. Around 1350, the influence of the more powerful Ayutthaya state grew over the Sukhothai kingdom. The word 'Sukhothai' means happiness and peace.

Sukhothai now

On 70 square kilometers you can find the ruins of 193 buildings from the old capital. The Historical Park is about 12 km from the current city. For transportation, there are shuttle bus services from the city to the park that start at 06:00 AM and end at 18:00 PM. Foreign tourists pay an entrance fee of 100 baht, for that amount you can certainly enjoy yourself for a day. The best time to visit the park is early in the morning. It is cooler then and the rising sun illuminates the ruins, a fairytale spectacle. Given the large area, it is wise to rent a bicycle.

Since 1991 the park has the title: Unesco World Heritage site.
