Khao San Road in Bankk has a magical sound for young Western tourists and backpackers. Especially the nightlife is famous or should we say: notorious? The bars, discotheques and clubs are well-known meeting places for tourists from all over the world traveling through Asia.

The energy of youthful ease is prominently present 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Khao San Road's illustrious past has been only partly replaced by the unstoppable stream of Western influences, such as the ghastly self-service restaurants including Starbucks and McDonalds. Khao San Road has changed function over the years. Khao San Road is now mainly used by many young tourists as a place to rest after a day of island hopping. It is also the base for visiting the temples and markets in Bangkok. Yet you can say that Khao San Road has become an attraction in itself.

Nightlife in Khao San Road

Khao San Road has plenty entertainment venues from which inveterate 'party animals' can choose. You will find plenty of bars and restaurants on this long nightlife street. Cheap drinks are served here. After sunset, the streets are populated by many colorful mobile bars.

'Buckets' – buckets containing a mix of alcohol and energy drink – are bought en masse to 'drink in'. This is a popular way to start the evening. Afterwards, visit the nearby clubs to sweat off the amount of booze on the dance floor. The thumping bass rhythm of blazing music, bright disco lights and half-naked bodies gleaming with perspiration are the icons of modern youthful entertainment.

Later in the evening there are more and more nightlife options that you can visit. At the 'Club and Lava Bar' fans of electronic beats gather in large numbers. Live music is played in the 'Shamrock and Brick Bar'. DJs play hip music and the latest hits. You should definitely not miss the 'Gazebo Khao San'. This Moroccan themed bar has been voted one of the Hippest Bars in the World by the backpacker bible 'Lonely Planet'. Gazebo is trendy and informal, but also offers plenty of space to dance.

Those who want to take it a bit easier can first have dinner at Madame Musur, the perfect place for a night out in a Lanna atmosphere. The bar offers typical dishes from the north of Thailand in combination with delicious cocktails. Whether it is “sai oua”. a northern Thai sausage made from pork and spices, washed down with a Thai variant of rum mojito, or a serving of “nam prik noom, Thai green chilli paste served with vegetables, paired with Chiang Mai's famous Madame Musur cocktail drinks and juices, Madame Masur has great flavor combos for guests. With wooden chairs, bamboo walls and roofs, paper lanterns, lounge chairs with Lanna-style upholstery and lots of northern artwork, you will feel like you are in Chiang Mai's trendy Nimmanhaemin district. Location: 41 Soi Rambutri, Chana Songkram, Phra Nakorn.

Hippie the Bar

Step back in time to the 70s at Hippie the Bar, which has a retro vibe, located in a 'secret' alley off Khao San Road. No live music here but a constant stream of radio hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Despite or perhaps because of its hidden location, Hippie de Bar is super popular with the local Thai creative and alternative crowd. Hippie de Bar serves a number of gaab glam, to be washed down with beer or a cocktail. The top dish you will probably see on many tables is a crispy fish spring roll, served with a hot “wasibi” dipping sauce.

The Club

The Club cannot really be called a hidden gem with the large illuminated billboard. But over the years, The Club has become an integral part of every night on Khao San Road. Here people linger in the evening until the sun rises again. This late-night destination features a huge dance floor where you can dance the night away. The special smoke effects, the avant-garde lighting and a gigantic sound system create a great atmosphere. The Club has its own DJs, but also invites guest DJs from neighboring countries. The crowd is both Thai and tourists, youthful, crazy and active. People feel free here, so crazy things like crowd surfing and dancing on the tables are very common here.

Getting Around Khao San Road (Hafiz Johari / Shutterstock.com)

Transportation in and around Khao San Road

From the Victory Monument, Siam or Silom you can take a taxi to Khao San Road for less than 100 baht. Buses 157, 171 and 509 run from Victory Monument (bus stop at Rajavithi hospital) along Ratchadumnoen Road. You can get off at the Khok Wua intersection (a stop in front of the Democracy Monument). From there, Khao San Road is just a short walk away. Once in Khao San, the best way to explore the area is on foot. Do you still want to make a nice exciting trip with a tuk-tuk? Don't forget to agree on a price in advance.

Khao San Road is a very cozy place and is a striking symbol of the peacefulness of young people visiting Thailand.

Everywhere in the world where young people come together to party, there are regular riots, fights, tension, disruptive drug use, etc., but in Khao San Road you don't see those negative statements.

It doesn't fit in peaceful Thailand I think, and it would also be nipped in the bud right away (and rightly so).
This is in contrast to seaside resorts in Spain or city trip cities such as Amsterdam where fighting is part of the nightlife culture and where the government no longer has any control over this nuisance.

I never saw fights or fights in Khao San Road, and I've been coming since 1986.

That is correct and is also the case in Pattaya. Despite the many bars, dance halls, seductive women and go go bars…..the present testosterone and alcohol, there is little nuisance and little crime.
Despite the many criticisms of the city from the western hemisphere, many cities in our country can only dream of it ......
Make 1 street in a European city like you have dozens in Pattaya and after three days you have to close everything. Wouldn't be possible with us and would be excluded. In a way, very sad that it has come to this.
