7 special facts about Bangkok

  1. Bangkok's full name is the longest in the world: The city officially has the longest place name in the world. In Thai it reads: “Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.” This means “City of Angels, Great City, Residence of the Emerald Buddha, Impregnable City of God Indra, Great Capital of the World beautified with Nine Precious Gems, the Merry City, abounding in the Huge Royal Palace, which resembles the Heavenly Abode where the Reborn God rules, City bestowed by Indra and built by Vishvakarman.”
  2. A city of contrasts: Bangkok is known for its contrasts, where traditional markets and ancient temples coexist with ultra-modern shopping centers and skyscrapers. This blend of old and new gives Bangkok a unique atmosphere that you will not find anywhere else in the world.
  3. The green Bangkok: Despite its urbanization, Bangkok is home to a surprising number of green spaces. Lumpini Park, often considered the 'lungs of the city', is a vast green oasis in the middle of the city. There are also plenty of hidden gardens and small parks dotted around the city, offering respite from the hustle and bustle.
  4. Bangkok's canals: Bangkok was once called “the Venice of the East” because of its extensive network of canals, or “khlongs”. Although many of these canals have been filled in over time to make way for roads, some still play a crucial role in daily life and transportation.
  5. Culinary paradise: Bangkok is world famous for its street food. What many people don't know, however, is that the city has a complex culinary history that combines influences from Chinese, Portuguese, Japanese and Western cuisines, resulting in a unique taste experience.
  6. The spirit houses of Bangkok: In many parts of Bangkok you will find small, colorful spirit houses. These are not intended for people or animals, but were built to house the guardian spirits of the place. It is a fascinating aspect of Thai spiritual culture.
  7. Bangkok's museums: In addition to the famous temples and palaces, Bangkok offers a series of unique museums. From the Museum of Siam which explores Thai history to the more quirky Forensic Museum, there is something for everyone.

  1. According to says up

It's the most amazing city I know.
However, the dark side is: it is hell for those who have no money.
Fortunately, there are more and more foundations (usually linked to temples) that try to help this group of people in one way or another.
It is the city of two extremes: you either love it or hate it. I don't think there is any middle ground possible.
    For me: I LOVE HIM.

  2. Lo says up

Bangkok is indeed a city you either hate or love. Not surprising with a population in the metropolis that is almost as large as Belgium, but located on a smaller surface area.
Something for everyone and that makes it such a nice playground to stay.
Theo talks about the dark side that is certainly there, but let Thai politics and its voters be about that and don't let it be a burden to a guest.

Bangkok, the most beautiful metropolitan area in Asia, culture and wealth coexist.
You will not find people showing politeness and respect towards each other in any country.
Clean streets, the toilets in the Malls, despite the busy traffic, people give each other space to move through the traffic. No honking as happens in most Asian countries, we can still learn a lot from that in Europe.
Go to Bangkok during Christmas and experience the most beautiful malls and hotels with their decorations.
