Tourists beware: Nine Thai dishes that guarantee a serious diarrhea!
Some time ago, the Thai Ministry of Health published a list of nine Thai dishes that can easily cause diarrhea.
Are ice cubes safe to use in Thailand or not?
I'm going to Thailand for a short holiday and of course I don't want to get traveller's diarrhoea. I had a discussion with a friend who is often in Thailand, according to him ice cubes in Thailand for ice coffee and those you get in your coke are safe, but I also read other stories.
Intestinal problems during holiday in Thailand
Those who come to Thailand for the first time will notice it: hygiene and food safety are clearly different than in the Netherlands or Belgium. You can therefore be affected by traveler's diarrhea or considerable food poisoning.
Dutch people who travel to distant destinations often import multi-resistant intestinal bacteria. These are so-called ESBL-producing bacteria. These are bacteria that are not sensitive to the usual antibiotics and are therefore very dangerous.
We are going on holiday to Thailand this summer. Now I have rather sensitive bowels (IBS) but I am also very prone to traveler's diarrhea and quick to race. That is of course no fun when you are lying on the beach or walking down the street.
Thailand does not have the best reputation when it comes to food hygiene. According to a 2011 British study, Thailand is one of the top three countries when it comes to the risk of contracting gastrointestinal problems. The result is often that you have to stay near the toilet for a day.
