For years I have been intrigued by the curious social phenomenon known as mass tourism. A phenomenon in which large segments of the population are - temporarily - directed south in droves every year, in exactly the opposite direction that tens of thousands of others have taken in recent years, driven by a compelling socio-economic necessity for them.
Neckermann also travels bankrupt: all flights are cancelled
After the parent company Thomas Cook Group Plc, Thomas Cook Nederland (Neckermann Reizen) has now also collapsed. That was in line with expectations, but the Dutch branch has still tried to carry out the trips that have been booked. At the moment there are still about 10.000 Dutch tourists abroad via Thomas Cook.
Travel company Thomas Cook bankrupt
It has been in the air for a while, but Thomas Cook, the oldest travel company in the world, has collapsed. The English travel company was struggling with a debt of 2 billion euros. Thomas Cook Group Plc. has 21.000 employees and provided annual holidays for 22 million customers.
A few days ago, an alarming message appeared on this blog about the decline of travel agencies in general and Thomas Cook in particular. However, the influence that Thomas Cook (1808-1892) had on the development of tourism and the massification of this tourism should not be underestimated.
Recently in the news is the possible demise of the oldest travel agency in Europe, Thomas Cook. The group has been losing millions, if not billions, for years and is now making frantic attempts to sell parts of the sizeable company. Thomas Cook's shares on the London Stock Exchange are barely worth anything.
