I would like to apply for a Non-immigrant “O” retired visa and then have it extended in Thailand. Is it true that one no longer needs to have insurance when applying?

I would like to give a tip about the message 034/24 from Piet, and/or others. Your answer is of course 100% correct to Piet's question “do I need a return ticket for a non-imm O visa”.

I am Piet, 64 years old, and I am emigrating to Thailand together with my wife and daughter. We have both a Dutch and Thai passport, our house has finally been sold and we can move to Thailand. Last year we went to the immigration office in Buriram and they told us that I have to take a non-immigrant O visa and extend it there for a year.

I am flying with Qatar Airways, and as you suggest I have requested confirmation that hotel bookings are sufficient, as proof that I am leaving Thailand within the allowed periods. They cannot confirm that the check-in in Brussels will accept this. They always send me back to the Thai embassy in Belgium, after much insistence, to confirm that this is sufficient for them.

Immigration office Sukhothai first demands a ticket with departure and return dates before they want to give me a re-entry. I think that is against the rules and they are always obligated to give me this when I ask for it. Seems like pure nonsense to me because what do I have to discuss if I visit Laos or Cambodia by car, for example.

Today I had contact with the EVA Air staff at Schiphol. My question was how they would deal with my return ticket with a date that is 63 days after the outward flight, while I do not take a visa. I was assured that I can sign a waiver at check-in or at the gate stating that any issues related to the return flight are my risk and not EVA Air's risk.

With some regularity, people respond to this blog with questions about an airline's return date policy. I myself had a problem when I left in October with a return date in December. I only had 3 days left on visa. The EVA Air staff was not aware of the fact that if you enter the country before your (Non-immigrant O) visa expires, you will simply receive a 90-day stamp upon entry into the country. They apparently thought that your return date must be before the expiry date of the visa. After a lot of calling and nagging I was allowed to go.

We (retired couple) booked a ticket for 86 days (departure January 3, return March 30, 2023) for Thailand, Pattaya. We therefore need extra expensive insurance for a Non Immigrant O retired visa. To avoid this, we can then apply for a Tourist Visa for 60 days and extend it by 30 days while we have to provide a copy of the ticket (so 86 days).

What we would like to know is whether it is necessary to provide an e-ticket for the return flight with the documents for the visa? is it ok to show only the outbound e-ticket? Because we want to book a return ticket later.

For our Thailand holiday we had booked a return flight with KLM: Brussels-Bangkok-Koh Samui. When we fly back on February 16th we would prefer to fly back from Bangkok as we will be close by then. Is that a possibility or do we have to leave from Koh Samui anyway?

My girlfriend is coming to the Netherlands this month, December, with a new Schengen visa for two years. Now I have a question about her return trip in March next year. Is still a long way off and maybe things will change again when we have a vaccine. Still watching coffee grounds.
