The Aliens Department of the Population Department in Ghent has informed me that after returning from Thailand I must report to the counter within one year to avoid being deregistered from the population register.

I plan to travel to Thailand by the end of the year with an O visa and after 2 months a retirment visa for 1 year. But now I read if you stay in Thailand for more than 8 months, the municipality can deregister you from the population register and you will therefore no longer receive disability benefits. Does anybody have experience with this?

I am from Belgium and have been in Thailand continuously since March 19, 2015 via TR visa. Unfortunately, I had not informed myself about the permitted length of absence. On the other hand, I did not know in advance how long I would stay. Recently and indirectly I learned that on December 18, 2015 a report was drawn up ex officio deletion from the population register.
