The pawnshops in Thailand are being flooded by people who have run out of money due to the corona crisis. The number of customers wanting to borrow goods shot up in the first three months of the year to 149.108 compared to 5.605 in the same period last year.
The summer holidays are over on Monday and the new school year starts. That also means that school supplies and school uniforms have to be bought. The pawnshops across the country are therefore reporting a big rush this week.
Uncle Jan is doing good business
Uncle Jan is doing well, to put it in a popular way. More formally, pawnshops do good business. Easy Money, Thailand's largest pawnshop, has posted a 20 percent increase in customer numbers in recent months.
