Piak looks up disturbed when he feels raindrops falling again. It has been rainy for days, the showers fall with the regularity of the clock. He is standing in the middle of a rice field up to his knees in water, the mixed bag that must pass for work clothes is soaking wet. His back hurts from bending over for weeks, hands and feet feel like sponges and are full of cracks.

One of the villagers who fascinates The Inquisitor the most is Ut. Still a fairly young man, thirty-seven years old now. The first meeting was during the period that De Inquisitor and lief were building, almost four years ago. Commute between Pattaya and the village, staying here for two weeks each time. Supervising construction – which was far too slow, often nothing happened. If you had to do something and we thought it best to frequent the village and surroundings often, get to know people. Wan is marked by the harsh and poverty-stricken Isan outdoor life. Hard head, coarse long hair, dark brown skin. She often drives around on a rickety and banging moped, looking for free. Her everyday clothes are worn and discolored. You can hardly put age on it, she might as well be sixty-five as forty-five.

is a kind of friendly courtesy given to slightly older people, best translated as 'little father'. Poa Wat is sixty-three, exactly four years older than The Inquisitor. And his name, (temple), is a nickname.

Manaas is one of those people who were born in the wrong place. Intelligent, but poor schooling. He has a broad view of the world, is not locked into a narrow Isan mindset. And is content with his fate despite realizing it could have been different.
