Chiang Rai and cycling.…(7)

Two weeks ago, in Episode 6 of my cycling serial, I mentioned Mae Sai and Chiang Saen as destinations on the outer edge of my range. I also wrote that, given the distance, I wanted to get there before the heat and annual air pollution descended on this beautiful province again.

This year, February, did a border run in Mae Sai to Myanmar / Tachileik. Nothing special in itself, many do it to get another 30 days stay upon returning to Thailand, using the TM6 arrival/departure card. Costs in Myanmar at the border control, 500 THB, which has been the same for years.

A lot of rain in the night has caused the Mae Sai River in Chiang Rai on the border with Myanmar to overflow its banks. The market at the Sailomjoy border is flooded. In some places the water is 1 meter high. Many sellers were surprised by the floods and were unable to get their goods to safety in time.

The border post between Thailand and Myanmar in Mae Sai (Chiang Rai) was closed yesterday after heavy rain and flooding caused by tropical storm Kalmaegi. Crossing the border would be too dangerous.
