Often “a land of smiles” but not now (reader submission)
I have been visiting Thailand for several years, often 3 or 4 times for about six weeks. Have already traveled through a large part of Thailand with my Thai wife. And yes, then you have to exchange your Euro banknotes for the Thai baht very regularly. Of course I know from the working method that the banknotes offered must be flawless, no notes on them and/or damage. But we were always treated courteously and kindly, with mutual respect. However, to my great surprise we, my wife 47 and I 64 years old experienced the following.
Do not exchange Euro notes at banks in Phayao?
Today we could not exchange Euro notes at Kasikorn and Krungsri bank in Phayao, they were not accepted for unknown reasons. Only at the Bangkok Bank we could change the EUR 1000. Strange story, never experienced it. A reason was not given. Afraid of covid transmission through the notes? Less trade in Euros (and other foreign currencies) due to spoiled tourist season?
Reader question: Bringing euro banknotes to Thailand?
As of January 1, ING has stopped issuing large denominations. I always took € 10.000 cash with me in 20 notes of € 500, later 50 notes of € 200. I know that I can now pin € 50 notes, but then I have to take 200 notes with me and that is a lot.
Reader question: Exchange damaged euro banknotes?
I have notes of 200 euros that are slightly damaged (small tears). Now the exchange offices in Thailand do not want to accept it. Now my question is, where can I exchange it?
Can I also go to the exchange offices with notes of 500 euros? I know you get a better rate with big bills. I usually stay on Sukhumvit road in Bangkok between soi 2 and soi 23.
I still have some euro notes in a locker with my girlfriend in Korat. Now that's a bit of a drive to pick them up, so I wonder if they can be changed everywhere again? I read somewhere that at the beginning of the corona crisis, exchange offices no longer wanted to exchange euros. Is that still the case?
Are the old 50 euro banknotes still accepted at money exchange offices in Thailand?
Are the old 50 euro banknotes still accepted at money exchange offices?
Exchange Euro banknotes of €100 and €200 for Thai Baht?
I'm going to Thailand soon and want to bring cash with me to exchange there. I have done this before but only with €50 notes. My question is does anyone know if you can also exchange banknotes of €100 and €200?
