Don't just say stupa to a chedi

You simply cannot miss it in Thailand; the chedis, the local variant of what is known in the rest of the world - with the exception of Tibet (chorten), Sri Lanka (dagaba) or Indonesia (candi), as the stupas, the round structures containing Buddhist relics or, as in some cases also the cremated remains of the Great Ones of the Land and their relatives.

What Chedi Luang on the corner of Prapokkloa and Rachadamnoen Road is, in my opinion, the most interesting temple complex in Chiang Mai and that is saying something because this city has just over three hundred Buddhist temples and shrines.

Whenever I visit Chiang Mai, the Rose of the North, my gaze is drawn to the golden sparkle on the mountainside. When the sun glows the great gold-hued chedi of Wat Phrathat Doi Soi Suthep, I know I'm back—albeit momentarily—in what I've come to think of as a bit of "my" city over the years.

Lampang is not only one of the largest cities in Northern Thailand, but has almost as many cultural and historical attractions as Chiang Mai. The most important piece of heritage is without a doubt Wat Phra That Lampang Luang. This temple complex originates almost as far back in time as the city of Lampang.

Thai Folktale: Rage, Manslaughter and Penance

This is one of the folktales of which there are so many in Thailand, but which are unfortunately relatively unknown and unloved by the younger generation (perhaps not completely. In a cafe it turned out that three young employees did know it). The older generation knows almost all of them. This story has also been made into cartoons, songs, plays and movies. In Thai it is called ก่องข้าวน้อยฆ่าแม่ kòng khâaw nói khâa mâe 'basket of rice little dead mother'.
