Agenda: Discover the cultural wealth of Thailand in May 2024
May 2024 in Thailand will be full of cultural and spiritual events, with Visakha Bucha Day taking center stage. Coinciding with the full moon of the sixth lunar month, this month offers a deep dive into Buddhist heritage through unique festivities and ceremonies that take place against the backdrop of Thailand's beautiful landscape.
Bun Bang Fai Festival in Yasothon
In this period of the year, the population in the northeast of Thailand (the Isan) starts to move en masse to give the "rain god" a clear message. And it's a noisy, screaming and terrifying message too, because it happens with hundreds of handmade rockets, the "bon fai", that are sent into the sky from the still arid rice fields.
Every May, about a month before rice planting begins, Thais on the empty plains of Isaan try to prove that building rockets doesn't require a degree in quantum physics.
Agenda: Bun Bangfai rocket festival on May 14 + 15
In Isan (Northeast Thailand) and in Laos, the beginning of the rainy season is celebrated in many villages with the traditional Rocket festival or the 'Bun Bang Fai'. In Thailand, the 'Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival' in Yasothon is the most famous festival.
