Corruption is still rampant in Thailand, we hardly need to tell you that. When it comes to a large scale and a lot of money, you can really talk about corruption, but in those small cases where you want certain actions to run smoothly, the name of a bribe is perhaps a bit more appropriate. Most of us have dealt with it in one way or another. Our blog writer and reader is also familiar with the phenomenon and he wrote a nice story about it years ago for the Newsletter of the Dutch Association in Pattaya.

The elderly among us still know the concept of “school swimming”. With the whole class on the bike to the public swimming pool to learn the art of swimming. We doubt whether that still happens, but in Thailand school swimming is probably something impossible. Blog reader Peter Wesselink regularly visits a swimming pool in his neighbourhood. With some regularity he fishes out a Thai child, probably saved from certain drowning death. Remarkable in the story is that he is often alerted by fathers to a child in need, fathers who almost certainly cannot swim themselves.

In general, you can expect foreigners who have a relationship in Thailand to make a financial contribution to that partner and family in order to raise their standard of living somewhat. We know all too well that this does not always go without a hitch, because articles on this subject regularly appear on this blog. Not every Thai who could use that support is lucky enough to have connections with a farang. David Diamant wrote a story about the adventures of a boy from Isan, who lives and works in Bangkok…. and studies.
