In 1995, my wife Oy brought not only love to the Netherlands from Thailand, but also a completely new vision of Christmas. Putting up our first Christmas tree together revealed a world of artistic precision and cultural surprises, and introduced a special Christmas tradition that would change our lives.

I don't know if it had been a Holy Night, but it certainly wasn't a Silent Night... Now that the rice harvest is over, most of the men in the village amuse themselves with flying kites and making kites.

Christmas brings mixed feelings to me every year in Thailand. Despite all the artificial trees and jingle bells in the shopping malls, the right atmosphere just won't come. We don't have to count on a snow-white Christmas here, but Silent Night, Holy Night at thirty degrees is also too much of a good thing. However you look at it, you will carry the memory of celebrations in the Netherlands with you throughout your life.

Today is Christmas, but it feels different than usual, partly due to the corona pandemic. Christmas is also celebrated carefully in Thailand. Not from the Christian point of view, of course, although a small percentage of Thai adheres to the Christian faith.

Those terrible Christmas carols, sung by shrill children's voices, just at the right pitch. The worst part is that even at 30 degrees Celsius, I can't get them out of my head. 'You better watch out, you better not shout'…No: I don't dream of a White Christmas in Thailand and 'dsjingel bens' also comes out of my ears. And then those saleswomen with those ridiculous red and white hats.

In the Netherlands I always looked forward to the Christmas period, partly because of the number of days off. By taking a few extra days off, you didn't have to work for two weeks. In those two weeks you could indulge in going out, eating and drinking. As a result, the kilos flew at lightning speed.

Today I sit outside and look at my Christmas tree. Beautiful lights and golden balls. Of course with a beer. Christmas and New Year are very close again. Already a bit upset because I only had one response from the 20 Christmas cards

The tree stands; the lights are on and the balls sparkle in the midday sun. Christmas in Thailand: I just can't get used to it. Never a white Christmas, or you have to spray large amounts of artificial snow. I shouldn't do too much about it either, because especially those fondant-like border decorations often provide a large dose of youth sentiment. Bach's Christmas cantata, or Stille Nacht, immediately puts me in the Catholic church on the Beeklaan in Den …
