Grand Prix Formula 1 Thailand possible on Phuket
With Bangkok off the track, the 2015 Thai Grand Prix will likely be held at Phuket.
The plans to organize a Formula 2015 race in Thailand from 1 are already at an advanced stage. The race would initially be held in downtown Bangkok. The design of the circuit had already been approved before that. However, the plans for the night race faced a lot of resistance from residents in the area. The race was banned in response.
Somsak Pureesrisak, Thailand's tourism and sports minister, confirmed on Tuesday that plans for a grand prix in the streets of Bangkok are definitely off the table. Pureesrisak did come up with an alternative location. "We will try to organize the race in the Phuket region," said the Thai minister. “Phuket is an ideal location that meets our goals of promoting tourism in Thailand.” Pureesrisak was also not worried about the disappearance of plans for a race in Bangkok. “We still have enough time to look for a new suitable location”.
Phuket is a peninsula in the south of Thailand and is best known for its stretches of white beaches. Phuket is both the name of the province and the capital of the province.
If that plan goes through (which I don't expect) it will be a disaster. There are no suitable roads here and there won't be (a major road through Patong, which was supposed to be finished 3 years ago, is still a sand desert. And we don't need it either: enough racing goes on without regard to traffic rules (Rules: what are they?) And probably the F1 organizers are too smart to let money disappear into bottomless pockets of regional drivers
Here in Buriram, next to the stadium of Buriram United, they are building a real race track that is also suitable for Formula 1, it should be ready halfway next year, for the time being they will first use it for all other car racing classes and for all types of motorcycle races, so we are ready in 2015, bring it on.
Have ever come across the name, but had to google where Buriram is located, it turns out to be in the much-discussed Isan, so finally a good reason to visit that northeastern area of Thailand as an avid F1 enthusiast.
