Thailand will become the first country in the history of the Asia-Pacific region to host an Air Race World Cup at U-Tapao Airport. These competitions will take place on November 17-19, 2017 under the auspices of the Sports Authority of Thailand as part of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

To make this possible, tests were already carried out last year in order to be able to start Air Race 1 this year. This is also part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of ASEAN. Minister Kobharn also indicated that as a leading global tourism destination, Thailand is always striving for interesting ways to attract new visitors and this event will help the Kingdom stand out as an ever-active innovator.

This Air Race 1 can be compared to the Red Bull Air Races, where specially designed sports aircraft for these races have to steer at a speed of 450 kilometers per hour over a course with inflatable cones about 12 meters high (similar to Formula 1 races for cars). ).

They first try to cross the finish line after eight laps on a tight five-kilometer circuit at only 10 meters above the ground. In the Netherlands this was shown twice in 2005 and 2008 in Rotterdam with Frank Versteegh as the only Dutch participant.

The Minister of Tourism and Sports estimates that Air Race 1 will attract at least 500.000 spectators.
