A unique Bangkok experience… walking through the city (video)
You can drive, cycle, sail, etc. through Bangkok. There is another recommended way to take in this fascinating metropolis: walking.
There are companies that organize walking tours through the old part of Bangkok and these are definitely worth it. One such tour organization is Expique, they offer you a range of unique Bangkok experiences. This tour starts with a short boat ride to Thonburi, the major district that occupies the entire west bank of the Chao Phraya River. More information: www.expique.com/
Walking in Thonburi by yourself
Not a fan of organized trips? Then set course for Thonburi, the 'other side' of Bangkok! Thonburi, once the capital of Thailand, has a relaxed, almost rural charm that contrasts sharply with the fast pace of central Bangkok.
Start your walk at the magnificent Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. The view from the top is breathtaking, especially at sunset when the Bangkok skyline is bathed in golden light.
Then walk towards the Taling Chan Floating Market. Although less well known than the other floating markets, Taling Chan is less touristy and you can enjoy delicious local delicacies, freshly caught fish on a grill and exotic fruits.
Continue your tour through the scenic 'khlongs' (canals) of Thonburi in a long-tail boat. It may not seem like a walk, but it is the best way to admire the traditional wooden houses on stilts and the green, lush gardens.
When you're on solid ground again, walk to the Artist's House (Baan Silapin). This centuries-old wooden dwelling is now an art gallery and puppet theatre, a true cultural gem tucked away in the quiet khlongs of Thonburi.
After all that culture, it's time for some nature! The nearby Princess Mother Memorial Park is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beautiful gardens away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Thonburi, with its mix of old world charm and local flair, will surprise you and give you a unique view of the city that you won't soon forget. So, are you going for a walk?
