Sri Thep Historical Park
Now that the Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex has been recognized as a World Heritage Site by Unesco for years, Thailand is making a new attempt. This time the Sri Thep Historical Park in Phetchabun province. The application will be submitted next month, which has been amended at the request of the Unesco World Heritage Centre.
The Fine Arts Department worked closely with Phetchabun Province in preparing the application. The official application is expected to go to Paris on September 30.
According to Pratheep Pengtako, director general of the Fine Arts Department, the park is now on the tentative list of World Heritage sites. Pratheep says the nomination consists of the three structures of the ancient city of Sri Thep, the archaeological site of Khao Khlang Nok and the archaeological site of Khao Thamorat. In order for the site to be listed as a World Heritage Site, the World Heritage Committee must determine that it meets one or more of 10 selection criteria.
The park contains a number of historical structures, including a Khmer-style prang, Thailand's only pyramidal mound, the Khao Klang Nok, and a stupa named Khao Klang Nai, famous for its Dvaravati-style bas-relief and small statues around the foundation of the structure.
The ancient heritage, believed to have been built about 1700 years ago, is known for its cultural and historical significance and has been listed as a National Archaeological Site since 1935.

It is a nicely maintained complex. Not so big or with many buildings. A small museum with history. Near the park is the khao klang nok and another temple complex. Interesting as a stopover to the north of phetchabun.
In February, the foundation of Si Thep is celebrated with a big festival. There will be a parade in traditional costumes, dance performances, a large market and in the evening a grand Mor Lam performance.
