De Chatuchak weekend market is very special. This market is immeasurably large and there is really everything for sale. If you are in Bangkok, definitely check it out.

There are many things in Bangkok that can surprise you, such as the many contrasts. Showy wealth against sad poverty. Beautiful temples and hideous buildings. Luxury department stores flanked by humble street vendors. What will certainly stand out is the size of this exotic metropolis. The word 'big' certainly applies to the weekend market called Chatuchak.

Big bigger Biggest

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is one of the largest markets in the world. The market consists of no fewer than 8.000 market stalls! Chatuchak or Jatujak is also called the JJ market. The market is very popular with tourists and foreigners, but also with the Thai themselves. On weekends, the market attracts 200.000 visitors a day.

Chatuchak: everything for sale

At this market you will be amazed at the huge selection. Really everything is for sale. The prices are low, so Thai people also buy in this market. This not only concerns normal groceries, but also durable consumer goods such as furniture and household appliances. And of course there is also plenty of food.

Where do you need to be?

The market is located next to Chatuchak Park. The fastest way to get there is to take the BTS Skytrain (Sukhumvit line). Get off at the 'Mo Chit' station, take exit 1, five minutes walk and you are there.

You can also take the MRT metro: get off at station 'Kamphaeng Phet' or Suan Chatuchak (Chatuchak Park); also a five minute walk.

The weekend market is open on Saturday and Sunday from 09:00 to 18:00 and Friday evening from 18:00 to 24:00.

Definitely do beautiful things for sale for little. Even from Pattaya by bus to Ekamai on Skytrain is doable. From Huahin mini bus and then taxi to Mochit. When we are in Bangkok we even do it twice or more because there is so much to buy and see. You can relax in an air-conditioned coffee shop near the exit. Please note that smoking is prohibited on the market, but there is an opportunity for it in certain places. Take a map and keep an eye on the clock tower because we even get lost sometimes despite having tickets from the shops where we buy our stuff. Thailand is not lagging behind but the latest gadgets can be found here. Watch your wallet carefully. And don't forget the beautiful porcelain and the flowers made of silk or clay nowhere cheaper than on the market.
Go early as it can be very hot.

      Dear Kristina,

There is also a bus that goes directly from Pattaya to Mo Chit station.
Same bus station as for the bus to Ekamai. (Pattaya Nua)

      Sincerely,
      Lodewijk

    Other markets often source here…
In other words, here you will find the lowest prices. And even if you don't buy, the knowledge of the price allows you to haggle in other markets… Because you have an insight into the margins. It has already happened to me that I was able to haggle 50% elsewhere after giving the reference price of this market…

Yes every time I stay in Bangkok I always go to the market on Saturday I like to look at the animals on the market for sale especially small dogs are popular with Chinese ladies and they get along well with them, otherwise I always fear the worst of the dressed animals because a dressed squirrel is not right. But go in the morning because later in the day it is very hot.

My girlfriend lives near JJ market, so a visit to this market is regularly scheduled. I buy silk for Dutch acquaintances.

Love these comments. I lived opposite it, Lad Phrao, when it was an undeveloped piece of land. No Chatuchak Market, no Central, and no Express Way or toll road either. The site was a fallow piece of land which was a large mud puddle after a rain shower. The weekend market was then on Sanam Luang where I bought English language books. These articles always bring back a lot of memories for me about Thailand at the time.
