Amphawa Floating Market near Bangkok (video)
The Amphawa Floating Market is a well-known weekend destination for Thais and especially popular with the residents of Bangkok, thanks to its proximity to the city. Ask visitors what they're looking for here and the answer might be: travel back in time, retro-style knick-knacks and fun trinkets, not to mention delicious treats like the local seafood.
Amphawa is a region in Samut Songkhram Province, located slightly inland at the northwestern tip of Bangkok Bay. You will find the Amphawa Floating Market partly on the water and partly on the jetties next to it. The market is in the late afternoon and early evening on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday is the quietest day, Saturday the busiest.
In the culinary field you will find everything here. From grasshoppers to coconut juice, from grilled octopus to fried quail eggs. Especially a lot of fish and seafood, prepared in many different ways. The enormous diversity makes this market so much fun. Small bars and restaurants are hidden next to the water, but you will also find modern ice cream parlors and coffee houses here. In addition, there is also a lot to take home: from strange canned fruits and seaweed chips to Bob Ross-esque paintings, colorful fans and mini sushi magnets.
It's touristy, but definitely not over the top. The prices here are also not touristic; so no real bargaining is necessary. For a dish you pay between 20 and 100 Thai Baht, very reasonable. Take a seat in one of the waterfront restaurants and you will be served large plates of traditional Thai food. While you dine under the stars and look out over the firefly-strewn river.
Enjoy fish cakes, chicken green curry, exotic vegetables, rice and crispy octopus.

Most floating markets take place early in the morning, but Amphawa doesn't start until late. One of the few floating markets that continues after sunset. A beautiful spectacle all those teeming lights on and around the water. You can also take a beautiful boat trip on the Meaklong River. Not to be confused with the Mekong.
There is a choice of nice places to stay on the water: from a simple guest house to a spacious resort with a swimming pool.
You can also ideally combine it with the Meaklong Railway Market in nearby Samut Songkhram. (Not at the moment due to the Corona outbreak on the shrimp market) A nice train trip from Bangkok when the train passes the market and the trade and awnings have to move aside. The windows of the train are open, so you have a beautiful view of the spectacle.
Don't go now, but also not when the tourists are fully present again. So before the Chinese tourists come again. Those Chinese tourists are brought in by busloads so that you cannot walk properly.
Recommended. Also pay attention to the water level. At low tide, the boats cannot sail.
