Important tips for safe trekking in Thai National Parks
Walking and hiking in national parks throughout Thailand are popular activities during the green season, a great time to explore the beauty of nature. Despite the beautiful surroundings, it is essential to be well prepared to avoid dangerous situations.
The Ministry of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has posted a list of precautions and rules for trekkers in national parks on its Facebook page. These guidelines are intended to ensure the safety of visitors.
Trekkers must be in good health. Persons with chronic diseases are discouraged from walking. Good physical fitness is essential to meet the challenges of trekking in mountainous and sometimes rugged terrain.
- Clothing: Wear long-sleeved clothes, comfortable and quick-drying clothes, long trousers and wind and rain jackets to protect yourself from the elements.
- Shoes: Full boots with ankle support and socks are a must to protect and support your feet.
- Hats: Protect yourself from sunlight and thorns with a good hat.
- Backpacks: Use a backpack that is the right size for your body to carry your belongings easily.
- tents: Provide tents of the right size and equipment for a comfortable stay.
- Food and drink: Bring enough food for at least two meals and have plenty of water bottles.
- Other supplies: Consider medication, a flashlight, a sleeping bag, a pocket knife, a lighter, paracords and garbage bags.
Hikers should be aware of trail conditions, weather forecast and park hours. It is important to contact park staff for up-to-date information and advice.
- Walk in single file at a consistent speed and keep your fellow trekkers in sight.
- Don't make loud noises that could scare wildlife or make them feel threatened.
- Rest for 5-10 minutes every 1 or 2 hours to rest and hydrate.
- Do not stray from the indicated routes and never walk alone.
- Refill your water bottles whenever you find clean water.
- To preserve the natural environment, do not leave any waste or collect flowers or plants.
With these tips and guidelines, trekkers can safely and responsibly enjoy the beautiful nature that Thailand's national parks have to offer.
