Spirit savior of lost souls

In Samea San lives a fisherman with a special mission. Too poor to be trained as a monk and still wanting to honor his deceased parents, he took up one of the meritorious tasks in Buddhism: collecting the dead from the sea.

Arom “Ta Yui” Ninsha calls herself “Spirit Hunter”. For more than 30 years he has been involved in helping people who drowned to recover victims of a shipwreck or criminal activity that others do not want to touch. In this way the spirits of the victims are given rest. He has already recovered more than 300 bodies and transferred them to the morgue without expecting payment.

His first activity started 30 years ago when someone asked him to find and bring back a drowned person for 200 Baht. At that time, many fishermen lived in Samea San. Many people died of various causes, but no one dared to recover the corpses. As a volunteer, Arom took on this task. Sometimes, he says, people give him 1000 Baht for fuel and his work, but not always. The money is partly used for offerings at the Wat and to pay respect to his boat “Nymph”.

Victims who cannot be identified come to a general cemetery in the vicinity of Sattahip, where they are buried.
