Working in Thailand, is that possible?
The editors of Thailandblog regularly receive questions from readers about the possibility to go to work in Thailand. We can be quite brief about the answer: 'not possible, unless'. That unless the door is closed and a very small crack. In 99% of all cases it is not possible to work in Thailand.
And make no mistake. Thailand is very strict when it comes to issuing work permits. Working without work permit in Thailand it is therefore a criminal offense and can lead to arrest and deportation.
To remind you once again of all the snags, below is the text of the Dutch embassy in Bangkok about working in Thailand.
Working in Thailand
Thailand is a popular holiday destination for many Dutch people. It is therefore not incomprehensible that many would like to stay in this country a little longer and look for a job. Finding work in Thailand is much less obvious for a non-Thai national than many think. The Embassy is therefore regularly asked for advice.
Visa
To apply for a work permit in Thailand, you must have a non-immigrant visa. The Thai Embassy can inform you about Thai visa procedures
Work permit
If you want to work in Thailand, you must have a work permit. This also applies to unpaid work. Volunteers must therefore also have a work permit. A work permit can only be applied for by the employer and is job related. By no means every Thai company or organization can obtain a work permit for a non-Thai national and by no means all positions are eligible for a work permit. You can download the most recent Thai regulations regarding work permits on the right.
Work permits can be applied for at the following locations in Thailand.
Alien Occupational Control Division
Department of Employment
Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare
Mit–Maitree Road, Dindaeng, Bangkok 10400
Tel: +02 245 2745
One Stop Service Center for Visa and Work Permit
Department of Employment
3rd Floor, Krisada Plaza Building
207 Ratchadapisek Road
Dindaeng, Huaykwang, Bangkok 10310
Or at provincial offices of the Department of Employment.
Qualifications
As a rule, you must have sufficient qualifications for the position for which a work permit can be applied for. In addition, it must be a position that cannot easily be filled by a Thai national.
The reality is that it is very difficult for someone with little work experience, without a necessary specialism, or with little (work) experience with Thailand, to qualify for a position with a work permit. An exception to this may be education, such as teaching English. A condition for an English teacher is, of course, that you have a good command of the English language and that you have the necessary teaching certificates. In short, you must be a qualified teacher and be able to demonstrate this.
Where to find vacancies
In the two English-language dailies (Bangkok Post and The Nation) occasionally post vacancies that are also available to non-Thai nationals. These are usually positions in education, hotel management and senior management positions in larger companies.
The website of de Dutch Thai Chamber of Commerce has a job webboard. Or You can search on one of the following Thailand job websites.
