Why are there still so many weed shops in Pattaya?
Dear readers,
I thought I read that this government wanted to reverse the flexible policy for the weed shops. You would then only be able to buy weed on medical advice.
I arrived yesterday in Pattaya but I still see as much as last time. Even more than 7eleven stores.
When will they finally do something about this because I don't like the look of it and I hate that smelly stuff.
Regards,
Wim

There is no talk of cutting back on the shops yet and even then, getting a prescription is not an insurmountable problem in Thailand. I find it rather strange that you are going to demand that those shops be liquidated because you hate them, so you just want to take away the livelihood of many people? Nobody asks you to visit those shops, you can just walk past them
I also believe that those weed shops do not belong in the streetscape. That stinking smell bothers me enormously.
The laws around smoking in Thailand are very strict. They should do the same with those weed shops. Or even better, just ban them again. Those operators will soon find another way to earn a living.
And as you say, you can get a prescription on every street corner. That must be okay then?
For me everything is fine. The fact is that we, as farangs, are guests in a country and where we have absolutely no say in the matter. It is their laws and their rules and I respect them completely. For me it is very simple: if it bothered me that much, I would just give it a wide berth. Not a hair on my head that would make any suggestion about forced closures etc. So yes, you may have an opinion but unfortunately for you nothing will be done with it, completely right
I read that the Dutch in certain and sometimes incomprehensible cases now also have to pay taxes. Aren't we then assuming that this person taxpayer also gets some say or a tiny bit of right about how it is spent. Indeed, this is Thailand and that will therefore also remain an illusion.
What a non-argument. What do taxes have to do with this? Where in the world do you have a say because you pay taxes? Let alone as a stranger in another country
Well William,
I've been a non-smoker for almost 20 years now, but I used to be a moderate shag smoker.
Sounds crazy, but I find that sharp cigarette/cigar smell worse than the sweet smell of weed.
I think it's not right to have all those shops, I'm against that stuff that destroys people
If it is banned, it still exists as long as the offender pays a premium to the police. So, I think it will be banned again soon... Isn't prostitution also banned in Thailand?
The previous prime minister had plans to drastically reduce the policy. The current government no longer has that, so no, there is no longer any talk of an imminent ban.
There are indeed a lot of coffee shops, but that will become less and less after a while. Many simply do not earn enough to survive. But if you like peace and quiet so much, why go to Pattaya. Or do you not find the amount of bars and gogos disturbing?
The problem is mainly with tourists who smoke weed all day long because they are not allowed to do so in many places of origin and now come to a kind of weed paradise. Yes, it stinks and people smoke at all times. But hey, I think normal cigarettes stink too and that is also possible, so if it bothers you, sit somewhere else or politely ask them to smoke somewhere else.
Smoking weed in public is prohibited. In most places, this is also pointed out and monitored. I do wonder what is so annoying about those weed shops? If you don't go in, you just walk past and don't smell anything. Every now and then I catch a whiff of weed, but that is really sporadic. In San Francisco, Amsterdam and many other cities you also smell weed sporadically. Personally, I certainly don't think it smells bad. A bit of nostalgia for my hippie years.
I find the many stinking diesel scooters and buses a lot more annoying and certainly a lot more harmful to health. In many places cigarettes are smoked at every opportunity and also a cigar or an e-cigarette.
There are also the not always fresh fumes from food stalls or sometimes the sewage system that stinks
There are many things that can bother you in Pattaya, including the scantily clad barmaids, the babbling and shouting black people, the pushy ladyboys, the sex tourists and so on.
All that is just the charm of Pattaya and one has to accept it. Those who are bothered by all that might rather go on vacation to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
