What are some good, quiet places to spend the winter in Thailand outside of Hua Hin or Pattaya?
Dear readers,
I am retired and would like to spend three months a year wintering in Thailand, but preferably not in the well-known places like Hua Hin or Pattaya.
I am looking for a quiet area, preferably with a mix of nature and some amenities. Are there lesser known places that still have a small expat community and where life remains affordable?
Thanks in advance for your response.
Regards,
Ben (Amersfoort)

I regularly visit Rayong and the surrounding area, not too far from Pattaya.
Plenty of beach and quiet areas.
Many expats living there.
It is also a fairly large city with all amenities.
Prices are not based on tourism.
Lots of industry there with lots of Thai from Isaan who have/are looking for a paid job there.
There are thousands of beautiful places and cheaper. Cha-am is 20km above Hua Hin. Cheap, many Thai who come there for a holiday. Tourists more every year. From there you can go up or up Hua Hin. How you like blue sea. Then I would look elsewhere towards Koh Chaang or south.
Hello Ben,
Then you will have to go to the larger cities in Isan.
That is usually cheaper, in rental and other activities, facilities are often at a high level.
I live in the suburbs of Korat as a year-round resident, but other cities like Khon Kaen are also fine. Expat communities are usually found in large sales centers or groups on WhatsApp. Places where you can quickly get informed about the ins and outs. I am in a group myself https://chat.whatsapp.com/GDUS1DKtaoCDgBMcDSssmC for local info.
On Google you can find a dozen cities that easily meet your needs in that area.
Succes
Try RAYONG , Mae Rampeung beach in PHE , and other nice beaches nearby
Not far from Hua Hin is Cha-am, a seaside resort mainly for Thai people, but in the winter months there are also quite a few winterers, who spend the winter in Cha-am year after year, it is much quieter and cheaper than in Hua Hn, but very cozy with its many restaurants and the famous Wednesday market
Also consider Chiang Rai province. I have been wintering there for many years. Relaxed atmosphere, lots of natural beauty, friendly people - and a pleasant price level to boot.
I was in Sukhothai in December/January. Quiet place between Bangkok and Chiang Mai with airport. A Thai owner who runs a number of Retirement Homes with her son. You can rent a nice bungalow there and if you want with care of 3 meals a day. I was there for a week but will definitely come back to stay there for a longer time to see if the environment and life there suit me so well to settle there after my retirement. If it seems like something for you then I can give you some more information.
For me, Isaan is the place to be, not the big places, but the small ones.
Like the capital of the province Chaiyaphum, with nice bars and restaurants and some national parks in the area. Rent a house from 5000 baht per month. A meal from 70 baht and a half liter of Chang from 65 baht.
If you are a bit older, you should also consider whether there are medical facilities and good hospitals in the area.
It is not pleasant to have to travel far to get medical care, sometimes having to return to hospital regularly for follow-up.
