Travel to Malaysia via Southern Thailand?

Dear readers,

In December/January, my Thai wife and I are planning to travel to Malaysia and Singapore with our car. My wife is afraid to pass through the south of Thailand because of the danger of attacks and kidnappings. Can this be assumed, negligible, which region is safe or unsafe?

Experiences in Malaysia and Singapore with your own transport are also welcome.

Regards,

Mark

The risk is negligible, so no cause for concern. There are several border crossings you can use. Popular ones are those in Dannok and Padang Besar, both in Sadao District of Songkhla. Other transitions include Betong (Yala) and Sungai Kolok (Narathiwat). Both are great places to enter Malaysia.

Kidnappings and attacks may be negligible if you only drive for a few hours through the southernmost part of Thailand.

I think that the journey there, due to the low traffic safety in Thailand, presents more risks than passing through the last southern 3 districts.

always good to keep in mind that there may be technical insurance consequences when you are in a red colored area.

I assume your wife is Thai. and do not know whether or not you are officially married.
In the past, in Malaysia and Singapore, it was sometimes difficult if you are not married and want to book a hotel room with a young Thai.
Also sometimes the immigration was not very friendly towards Thai ladies.

I don't know how some of the local Muslim population react to a Thai Farang couple.
I've had problems with it in the past.
My Isaan wife also does not want to go to southern Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
Hopefully there will be a post from someone who has lived there for years and has insight into the current situation.

To end it all on a positive note.
I personally think the southernmost part of Thailand is also the most beautiful in Thailand in terms of flora.

We live in Songkhla, we do not notice / hear anything about unsafe situations.
If you go via Sadao you avoid the 3 'red' provinces.
Does your car also have a license plate with 'normal' letters (and numbers)?
I understand that the application can take a long time.
