Dear readers,

Would like to know if I travel to Malaysia, via Sadau border, do I need to get a sticker to drive in Malaysia, is there a location in Phuket where I can get it, or do I need to get it before the border?

Thanks in advance.

International Thai number plate and Thai Car passport, car must also hold original blue book for the car.

I assume you want to drive your own car?

If the car is not registered in your name, it will be something else.
You must first have a translation of your Thai registration certificate made at the local "Land and transportation authority" (where you also get your driver's license).

For this, the owner of the car must have a valid passport, and if you are the owner, a valid visa for Thailand. (Visa exemption will not work for you)

Then you can undertake the journey to Malaise. As soon as you enter Malaise, so right after immigration, there are some offices on the right.
You have to buy insurance. Even if your Thai insurance says it covers driving in Malaysia, you should still buy that insurance. An English version of your license plate is also made there.

Then you go with all your papers to the last detached building in the row. There you get
(free) a paper (it's not a sticker) that you have to put behind your window. At that office, it is also checked whether your car complies with the Malaysian traffic rules. They are especially precise on dark tinted windows.

Really make sure that all your papers are in order, because a km further in Malaysia there is a police check in 99% of the cases that check all papers again…..

And oh yes, stick to the speed limit in Malaysia. There is a lot of checking.

If you plan to drive in Malaysia more often, it is best to hand in that paper when you leave Malaysia. This registers how many days you drive in Malaysia. You are allowed to drive in Malaysia for a maximum of 180 days per year. If you do not hand in the paper, the days will continue to count.

    Good luck, Arjen.
