Dear readers,

In 2 to 3 years my wife and I will move to Northeast Thailand, to the village of Nong Pla Pak, district Si Chang Mai. We have a house there in the bush actually or at least close to it.

My question: is there anyone here who happens to live in that region and uses our friend Elon's Starlink system for an internet connection?

I ask this because I am at least 2 km from the public road so an internet cable and the necessary amplifiers would be a lot of work I think. This for a stable, reliable internet connection.

Regards,

Chris

    Hi Chris,
Starlink is not yet available in Thailand. It is still awaiting regulatory approval. I think it is certainly an interesting development, however, in Thailand there are very good providers such as True and AIS and also affordable, at least cheaper than Starlink. It seems to me that if you can get electricity to your house, a fiber cable will not be too difficult.

      Dear Maltin,
Thanks for the explanation. I didn't know that Starlink wasn't approved yet. Yes, I've already experienced that they have good providers there, such as True and AIS. Then it was only with Wifi. I also didn't know that there was fiber available, especially not in such a remote place. Now as far as the electricity is concerned, I've already had 7 poles put up to attach the cable to, because until last year it was just hanging in the trees. Now I hear from my wife that there is still a part where it's just hanging in the trees. I'll have to look into that when we're there in October. I'm not that familiar with fiber, I've heard that the cable itself is quite fragile and is therefore better placed in the ground, so on a pole?

I don't think they're laying anything other than fiber anymore.

Fiber also hangs on the poles with us and is strong enough if it has enough freedom of movement, i.e. is not stretched too tight. Possibly place loops that absorb tensions.
Make sure it is not folded anywhere and that it continues nicely.

And then also making sure that the fiber reaches your modem, in other words, to the outside of your house and then further inside with a coax, is of course of no use.

Starlink is currently still illegal in Thailand. They do not have a license.

As far as I know, Starlink is banned in Thailand. All internet traffic goes through a state controlled and censored firewall (thanks to the Chinese). With Starlink, they lose that control and they don't want that.

The Chinese are also working on a similar system so with the close ties they have here, expect this to be used.

    Overview is here https://www.starlink.com/map

Thanks I just read that there is also fiber there, that is an alternative and indeed on that map it says that Thailand is not mentioned. For that "Chinese" system, I am honestly not jumping for joy now.

    Dear Chris
There is also an internet provider called CAT, the internet connection is via a USB stick so no cable is needed and internet everywhere because you simply take your USB stick with you
