Reader Question: Shayne Hostel in Bangkok near Khao San Road?
Dear readers,
When looking for affordable hostel (backpackers) addresses, I recently came across the apparently very recently opened Shayne Hostel on the booking.com site. This hostel is located approximately 8 minutes' walk from Khao San Road according to description and offers overnight stays in a dormitory at 350 baht, including a simple breakfast and free WiFi. What struck me when looking at some of the photos was the large number of original paintings in Picasso or Dali-like style.
It seemed not only a newly decorated hostel, but also a kind of Art Gallery. Does anyone of the readers know this address and/or have they spent the night there and tell me if this is recommended?
I will probably travel hub Thailand again at the end of this year. The address and some impressions can be found on booking.com. Haven't come across it anywhere else.
I look forward to your response.
Regards,
Piet

13 Different opinions on a site, you can probably find more on the net.
The chance that one or two people have slept here is…
Will those opinions make a difference to whether or not a booking is made?
You now get even more opinions about other hostels that influence your choice.
I would just make 2 bookings at different hostels, you can always "evade".
NB. You mention the Shane hotel. This is not the address I intended. After all, I call it Shayne Hostel which is in a completely different location. Reviews, especially when it comes to several, usually give a fairly reasonable picture in my opinion. But indeed .. tastes can differ.
I myself have spent the winter in that area for many years and see the number of hoStels almost triple each time - there must be at least 200+ by now. They all (just like every Thai shopping mall, town, market, food stall) look like 13 in a dozen -Thai don't really like individuality, they do like imitating (yes, I know, after more than 30 years of visits I still NL- s brutally hard).
There are still those old-fashioned GUESThouses (say: keh houw), which cost much less per private room, and which, no prejudice, are not full of cockroaches or too dirty. Only - a huge disaster for today's youth - they are not on www or booking.com. Very much for 2000!
The latest trend in the hospitality industry (note that S) is art, because Thais love imitations, everything can also be perfectly imitated - and that probably already answers your question.
In practice, the appreciation of YOUR stay in a hoStel (= dormitory) appears to depend mainly on who is also staying there and that can therefore never be predicted (think a little). Could be a group of just drinking Scots, a bunch of Ifone staring Chinese, unintelligible Ozzies (from Australia), or shouting Braobers who think Thai money is bad.
By the way, you can see exactly where it is located on booking, with the address, so if you had been smart enough to mention that…………..
