Dear readers,

I am writing this reader question on behalf of my friend. I am looking for work for him here in Belgium, the wider region of Turnhout. My boyfriend was a massage therapist in Bangkok, but due to Covid-19 and the lockdown in Thailand, he recently lost his job, the massage parlor where he worked has closed its doors. Because there are no prospects in Thailand for him to find other work now, I would like to give him the opportunity to come here and let him work here.

He is in possession of the necessary diplomas and has several years of experience. Speaks sufficient English, and he will try to learn Dutch here with the necessary training. If someone could help us, an application for a work permit will have to be made.

With sincere hope of responses, I remain in gratitude.

Regards,

Peter

You can forget about it by way of the work permit. You will have to bring him here legally and then he can work as a self-employed person (very easy to obtain) at the numerous Thai massages. They are looking for workers everywhere.

    Dear Peter,

Perhaps I can share with you my experience with my Thai friend (now husband) in the Netherlands long before the Covid period in which a partly comparable situation to your situation took place. There may be a tip for you. However, I don't know if your friend is or can become your life partner.

I had my friend, Thai masseur, come to the Netherlands in 2003 under another title (cohabitation/relationship). After a few months of getting used to it, I wrote an open application letter with him, in which his background and that of his parents are described on 1 A 4 . We personally delivered about twenty of these letters to hotels, retirement homes, nursing homes and hospitals. Within a week he received a telephone invitation for a job interview at hotel Huis ter Duin, where I was allowed to attend and he was immediately hired.
He worked there for several years with pleasure and great appreciation. A difference with your question is that he entered here under a different legal title, which made it easier to look for work. I don't know what the work permit rules are like in Belgium, but in the Netherlands these rules are generally strict as far as I know.
That can make it a lot more difficult to obtain a residence permit from Thailand.

Anyway, I wish you good luck with your search.

    Sincerely,
    Paul
