Reader question: Laos or Malaysia?
Dear readers,
Just like previous years, we are going to Thailand for 4 months. We then stay in Jomtien but have to hop on a visa after 3 months.
Last year it was Cambodia, but this year we want to do Laos or Malaysia. We can't decide, that's why we put this problem to you.
What shall we do? Are you so curious about your tips?
Regards,
flavor

I'd toss a coin.
They are both beautiful countries with nice people and good food.
Both authoritarian regimes. If you like socialists, Laos is the place to be.
For Muslims you have to go to Malaysia, but they are moderate, don't be afraid.
Hi, my choice would be Laos, Luang prabang in combination with Vientiane. easy to reach by bus or plane Bangkok Airways from Suvarnabhumi airport.
No visa is required for Malaysia. That is different for Laos. I would therefore choose Malaysia myself, although it also depends on whether you just want to cross the border back and forth or want to be a tourist.
No visa required for Malaysia then I would consider flying there soon to return to Thailand by means of a visa exemption.
But you make a comment about that "depends if you just want to go back and forth across the border or be a tourist".
Are there problems to be expected to only go back and forth on the same day?
I have now searched Luang Prabang in Laos four times. Flying is a bit more expensive, but a charming little town on the Mekong with lots of small hotels and even wine bars. Beautiful temples! Recommended. Everything within walking or cycling distance.
Flavor, you write that you are going to Thailand for 4 months, just like in previous years. So probably in the coming years too. Toss Khun Koen's coin, go to one country this time and another next time. 'Problem' solved and you don't have to make a decision.
I know both countries
But since I fly to Laos more often, I'm getting more and more fond of this country and its inhabitants.
I am certainly not a socialist, but the Laotian people are “rather”. I have no other word for it. My father once said: the poorer the people, the better!
Dad, it's right!!
I am also staying for 4 months. But you can also get a stamp for another 30 days, I'm told.
I hope it's true!!!
No, that is normally not possible.
90 days, obtained with a Non-immigrant O, cannot be extended by 30 days.
It is extended by 60 days if married, or a year if you meet the condition of a year extension.
Dear,
I would like to join the majority above and would also choose Laos.
All the more so because I assume that you don't just want to do a “border run”, but also want to soak up some of the country's atmosphere and culture.
Laos is fully Asia, with a lot of culture, beautiful historical heritage and a pleasant population, good food with still a touch of "gastronomy francaise".
Malaysia is Eastern but mainly Muslim oriented and is therefore a different culture than what you are used to in Jomtien.
But depending on how much time you allocate for this and how much you want to spend on this, the choice remains yours.
Whatever the choice, enjoy it and then make a nice story of it on Thailandblog.
A visa for Laos can be obtained in Khon Kaen, Mitraparp Road, towards Udon.
Recommended to pay in dollars, about 30 / 35 dollars.
